I just bought an 86 Bronco with the EFI 5.0 and AOD trans 3.55gears and 35" tires. AOD trans is toast, no forward gears at all. I have a C6 and T-case out of an 86 F150. Has B&M street shift kit and aprox 2K stall converter if I remember correctly. My question is will the C6 be a direct swap? Should I replace the converter with a factory stall converter? I also have a rebuilt 5.0 that is fairly stock, just forged pistons, ported/polished heads, and a mild cam. I am unfamiliar with the early Ford EFI. Would this engine work or should I just freshen up the stock engine in it? The fiance hijacked it on me so I want to keep it fairly reliable and street-able for her. Thanks for any input guys!
those 35" tires and stock gears are what killed the AOD which is a bummer. yes the trans would be a direct swap although you will need a 5.0/C6 flexplate with a 50oz imbalance. you may also have to swap drive shafts.
the 2k converter may be good although it will generate a lot of heat if you keep the gears stock and continue to run those size tires. Moving down in tire or up in gears would be a good move.
with out knowing the specs of the mild cam in the other motor its probably not a good candidate. the speed density efi in your 86 doesnt play well with such changes.
Pretty much just a weekend runner, and someting for her to run when the weather is bad. No major off road or interstate driving. May end up regearing it in the spring
putting another AOD in the truck would be the faster swap. I had a similar setup on my 88 bronco. with 35's, stock gears and the AOD you would never use OD. and the rule of thumb with that trans when everything is stock would be to not be/use OD until your going 50+mph otherwise its hard on the OD band.
the AOD's from 88 -89 are the better built years for that trans. you can have a stout built one for about $1100.
If you go the C6 route make sure to install a large cooler, the tire/gear combo will not be nice on it either. and going to a stock converter might not be a bad idea either.
