I have looked into that, not for a Ford but some chevy projects I used to have. When you look at the junkyards for the basic engine you get a false sense of what it is going to cost.
These ls engines can be low mileage and cheap, with good horsepower numbers. But then you look at the special ignition you need to buy to make it run without a computer, the special intake so you can run a carb, the special oil pan to need sometimes to make it fit, and the special flexplate or flywheel you need to mate to a older non-computer trans, and you can have a couple thousand in new parts just to make it fit and run in a older vehicle.
You can try to keep the stock fuel injection, but what a mess of wires and it's all tied into the dash as well. Aftermarket fuel injection setups are not cheap either.
