Anyone know if the crankshaft bolt on a Ranger 2.3L is counter-clockwise to tighten or clockwise?? I am trying to replace the timing belt on my 4 cylinder and the only thing holding me back is getting the crankshaft bolt out so I can get to the other cover to replace the belt.
Counter-clockwise to loosen just like a regular bolt. If it's a 5-speed and you are using anything other than air tools, you will want to have the truck in 4th gear when you loosen the bolt. A cheater bar is helpful too.
I just changed mine in the parking lot at work. I didn't have any power tools, so I had a 1/2" drive on it (22mm btw) and a 4ft piece of pipe on the ratchet for a breaker bar. I took off the pulleys and put a big set of Vice Grips on the little tangs and wedged those against the stationary pulley above it so the thing wouldn't turn (had it in gear too). Worked just fine.
Thanks to all that replied, the help was most appreciated. When I used to own & work on Chevy's the Crankshaft bolt was lefty tighty & right loosy, so I just wanted to clarify.
Tried the airgun, but the compressor didn't have enough power, so I tried a large piece of pipe, which powered it out in no time.
