I have a 1989 Bronco with an EFI 302/5.0. I am considering replacing the engine with a GT40 5.0 out of an Explorer and using MegaSquirt EFI to control it. Since I'd be doing that, it seems like it would be a good time to build up the engine somewhat. Assuming I'd be starting with the Explorer 5.0 and that I have the electronic control part squared away what would be required to get it to, say, 300 horsepower and 350-400 ft-lb of torque at the crank?

A full exhaust system, a cam like the Comp 35-320-8, and matching valve springs. The heads will have to be machined for those springs and will require the matching locks and retainers, and the motor will make 350tq but it will be up at 3500rpm or so.
Since you're going to do this, why not go to a 351W instead and gain some much needed torque at lower rpms ?
That was a thought, but a short version of the salient points for me:
1. I have a number of friends who are Fox-Body 5.0 Mustang guys. They have lots of 5.0 parts I can get ahold of from them for little or nothing.
2. I may be getting an Explorer 5.0 motor for free.

Hm. That doesn't seem too bad. Can you point me at some dyno sheets for this setup?

the explorers used a coil pack rather than a distributor, just something else to consider.
