I am interested to learn more about the 5.0 that came in the explorer.
I know that it uses the "HO" firing order. I am wondering if it is the same moter as the Mustang GT. Is it a "roller" motor? Which heads were used? I have heard rumors that this engine had the cast iron GT40 heads to make up for a restrictive exhaust system. If you have information about this particular engine I'd love to hear it.
These vehicles came with the 5.0 V8 from 1996-2001. '96 and early '97 came with the GT40 heads with 210 hp and 275 ft. lbs of Torque. Approximately, Feb 1, 1997 through end-of-production in 2001 came with the GT40-P heads with 215 hp and 295 ft. lbs. of torque. They all came with roller hydraulic cams, but the cam is a little weak on it's own. The intake is made up of a GT40 lower intake and 5.0 Cobra upper.
However, with a few upgrades, these vehicles can be a lot of fun. Because the engine is simular to the 5.0 found in the Mustang until the mid '90s, you can use some of the performance upgrades from the Mustang crowd. However, the heads are not the same, nor do they use the same headers.

Torque Monster Headers for 5.0 V8 Explorer/Mountaineer
The reply from rcpasq is news to me . I have one of the first explorers with the 5.0 to roll off the line. My understanding it was discontinued in 97. It went to the 4.? . My old supervisor had one and I know it wasn't a 5.0. and the heads on mine are cast steel.with a aod trans..The shocks were standard due to the weight. If you got the six you recieved an auto adjust shock which I am verrrry thankful I don't have cause it runs around $500.00 each to replace I heard. as far as the horsepower I believe He is correct It has 215hp.
Ford Motor Company produced the 5.0 V8 Explorer/Mountaineer into the 2001 model year. I say, "into the 2001 model year", because the new Explorer/Mountaineer (2002 model) was actually released to the motoring public around March/April 2001.
Presently, Tech Performance & Engineering is in the middle of getting our Torque Monster Headers Tested and Certified with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and their main requirement is that will use the last year of the 5.0 V8 Explorer/Mountaineer, a 2001 for testing!
If anyone is interested, I will send you an installation Video (VCD) for our Torque Monster Headers for the 5.0 V8 Explorer/Mountaineer 1996-2001 upon request for your viewing, free of charge. Thank you.
All the Best,

Can you link me to a dyno report on your headers please? If I can get a carb sticker I'd be interested.

I am pretty sure that the 5.0L engine, as stated in other posts, made it into the Explorers and Mountaineers after 97 (my 97 Mountaineer was only offered with the 5.0L that year).
They came mated to the 4R70W 4 speed automatic transmision and a 3.73 rear end when with AWD (did they even make a 5.0L that was not AWD?). Ratings for my 1997 Mountaineer (as far as my research shows) were 210HP and 270lb/ft of torque.
The 5.0L was eventually replaced (1992?) with the 4.6L V-8 in the Explorer family.
The 5.0 V8 was replaced in 2002 with the 4.6 and remains the main V8 for Explorer/Mountaineer and the hipo 4.6 (302 hp double-overhead cam) for the Aviator. Basically, the Maurauder engine.

I should hope so... or else the 5.0L V8 under the hood of my 2001 is a figment of my imagination... as well as all the others of the same year I see on the road with the little chrome "V8" behind both front wheel wells...
