All 5.0 motors in Explorers were GT-40 intakes. The difference was in the heads. Beginning in 1997, FoMoCo went from the standard GT-40 heads on an X to the GT-40-P heads. The upper plenum also had some vacumm line differences, and the EGR setup is different.
I have a 302 with a carb and want to convert to efi. I have access to a wrecked explorer with a 5.0. I just saw on ebay that these intakes are gt40 and not the 5.0 HO type like the mustangs. I think this would be an upgrade over the H.O. ? Did any other ford 5.0 come with factory gt40 intakes (cougar/t-bird, lincoln, etc) and are the cobra manifolds interchangeable with the gt40's ? tahnks chuck
I don't know about the T-Birds or others. The GT-40 and Cobra intakes are interchangable. Basically the Cobra uses the lower GT-40. If you can get the Explorer, and are looking to change your carb out - that would be the way to go. That way you would have the computer, mass air, injectors, wiring harness, etc, all from the same setup. Plus both the GT-40 and GT-40P heads are great heads.
Good luck with the project!! Let us know how it goes!
One other question, while going thru some of the ads in the magazines I noticed that the new cobra intakes are $399 and gt-40's are $599. Why the big difference in price and don't the Cobras flow better? thanks chuck
Good question - maybe they are just selling the upper Cobra plenum, and the GT40 is coming with the upper and lower?!?!?! Can't help on that one. But yes - from what I understand, the Cobra is supposed to flow better...
