Hi All....I noticed a sqeaking noise coming from the rear brakes so I decided to do a little investigating. The drivers side drum came off with no problem, I adjusted the brakes & everything was great.
But of course I had to run into some difficulties.....
The passenger side drum would not come off for the life of me. I hit it with hammers, tried shimming it off, I even was trying to pry it off with a couple of screw drivers...it wouldnt budge...
Any ideas how I might go about getting this drum off....
If the drum's wear ridge is not hung up on the shoes, then it's more than likely seized on the axle. Do you have a propane torch or an oxy/acetelyne rig? Try putting a little heat (very little) around the portion of the hub that seats over the axle. This has always worked for me. Have all of your tools ready and try not to get it too hot. Also try not to heat up the axle. Concentrate a low flame around the drum only.
Have you tried to back the shoes off on that side yet???? Just wondering cause my passenger side always gives me hell. I usually try to back the shoes off and if that doesnt do any good then i pry them off witha pry bar. but be ready to re assemble with new parts
If you look on the back of the dust cover you should see a little slot cutt into the dust cover. You should see the Adjustment **** for the rear brake shoes, Just Screw this and It'll take the tention off the Shoes So they move back from the grooves that are wore into the drum. Then the drum should slide right of like your other side did.
try pounding the drum right around the hub area with a heavy hammer in-between the lug nuts, i've had luck with that loosening up drums stuck to the hubs. be careful not to ding up your studs too bad & wear safety glasses.
There "should" be a rubber plug in the slot to keep debris out- I usually use a shot of PB Blaster to get the drum off. Spray the stuff on, let it sit for about an hour, and the drum will be much easier to get off. Also, when re-assembling, use anti-seize.
Try pulling on one side of the drum while tapping side of drum with a hammer on the oposite side. It may take a little while and make your ears ring but it works. Hitting the drum with a hammer knocks the shoes away from the drum just don't hit too hard or the drum may crack(done that). Spraying the center with wd40 also helps.
