Hello reg1952, no and big no, acoustic sealant will flow when it gets hot and is awful to use, it is used for sealing poly vapor barriers as well as acoustic purposes.
What brand name should I ask for up here in Ontario. Everyone I ask thinks I have 2 heads. Someone have a part number I could give the parts store. Thanks
Is this the right stuff?(3M™ Auto Bedding and Glazing Compound, 08509)
Looks like the right stuff, I bought a tube of it but didnt use it, my seal fit pretty well so I am hoping for no leaks. If it leaks then I will add the sealer, looked like too messy of a job to try using it while installing the glass.
Wow how is this so f%cked up go to a glass shop and ask for the right stuff , if you think saving $ 3 on a tube of sealant is worth the savings then by all means go for it
And I was always told there was never a stupid question. I went to a glass shop and they said they had not done a windshield like this in a long time and was pretty sure the 3m product was what I needed but where not sure so that's why I asked again. Sorry!!
No I'm sorry no need to react like I did although I do find it odd that a glass shop wouldn't have or at least be able to order you the right stuff . Are you trying to fix leaks in a rubber gasket windshield or just wanting to put extra in when you install it ? If the rubber is in good shape it's rare that it would need sealer
I am also in Canada like reg1952, carpenter suggests using a specific sealant (which I cannot even find on the internet) the glass shop suggested a butyl sealant (which they cannot get any more) but sent me to a body shop supply (older guy there also said they could not get it any more and suggested to try it dry) the auto glass shop also thought I had 2 heads (young guy) and said they only use urethane, told him I was looking for a sealant not a glue? I was going to try "lumber yard butyl" but decided it looked too thick or heavy. The point is this is still a legitimate question.
