Hi! First post here. I recently bought an 86' F-250 with a 6.9 diesel and an aftermarket turbo. I want to know what the normal temperature range is and what maximum temperature should be? Thanks, Jim
First off I am assuming you mean coolant temperature. If so normal driving, normal day yes betweeen the O and R if correct.
A small suggestion, invest in a 3 guage pack. The most important temps that you want to monitor, not in any specific order, are Oil Pressure, Coolant temperature and exhaust gas temp.
Coolant temp 180 to 210 F is just fine
Oil Pressure 15 - 20 at idle and 40 or so going down the road.
Exhaust gas temp keep it below 1100 F and the motor will last a long time. Anything more than that and you are just burning fuel for no reason.
If the coolant temp seems kinda high and everything seems ok your fan clutch might be crap. When the fan clutch engages you will hear it, it is very loud.
Thanks Aallron. I have six after market guages. One for turbo rpms, engine rpms, oil temp.(220-250), trans. oil temp(180), exhaust temp.(300-700 so far) and coolant temp. The coolant has reached 230 on long inclines. Usually it runs between 200 and 210. The fan engages at different temps. Sometimes it engages at 180 , sometimes at 200,210,220 and 230. Is this normal? What activates the clutch? Thanks all that responded. Jim

The fan clutch is activated by the spring thermocouple on the outside front of the clutch itself. A big problem with these is that the coiled spring gets covered with grease, usually from a leaking a/c condenser or aftermarket tranny cooler (both of which are mounted in front of the rad). If the coil spring is too greasy/dirty it can't sense the incoming air temp and open the valve inside the clutch for the silicone to flow and lockup the clutch. BajaGringo
