Door Striker Nut

So last night I was removing my door striker latch to check the threads and correctly order a new one (7/16-14 'coarse thread' in case anyone is wondering).

When I took off the striker, the nut fell down into the cab and has now disappeared.

Anyone ever have this happen to them? Know of a way to get the nut out of the inside of the cab?

I'm thinking coat hanger + magnet + lots of flashlights.

If all else fails, I may cut out an access hole... I want to rust-proof the inside of my cab corners anyways.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Here's a photo of the striker location and the small access holes I have to work with...

Wow that's bad. Puting it back on will be the biggest problem. You will probably have to cut that section out and then weld it back in.

That shouldn't have happened. That's a caged nut to allow the nut to move for adjustment but not to drop down and get lost. Sounds like the cage broke.
That's going to be a tricky repair and I can't think of any way to do it properly that doesn't involve cutting an access hole.

I've considered cutting out a small access hole. One large enough for me to get my arm fully into the back of the cab and reach down to get the nut.

The trick is to make the hole low enough to reach it, but high enough to hold it back in place.

Anyone have any idea how the cab pieces go together at that seam in the photo I posted?

Is that simply a seam between pieces? Does the hole go all the way down to the cab corner?

Cutting a hole isn't an issue - it's the location of the hole that I'm concerned about. I don't mind doing that because it will allow me to clean/protect some of the areas that I can't normally get to which are prone to rusting.

Thats familiar. I remember fishing it out with a magnet but I bet I had already cut the holes for those speakers I sunk into the cab behind the seat. I think I was able to push it up against the hole and start the bolt...never loosened it that far again.

How about welding in a square nut?

I like this idea, but wouldn't that technically defeat the purpose of the nut? The nut is supposed to be able to slide up and down so that there's tolerance for error in how the door was mounted.

Once I get my new striker installed, I'll likely never loosen it again. This is just one of those things...

So you're saying that I should be able to cut a hole on the inside of the cab rather than cut a hole in the door frame? That would be nice because I don't really want to have issues with the pillar or the door closing.

Like grinngetter said. I was looking at my truck last night after I read about your problem. It looks like you can make hole right behind the seat which should give you acsess .Maybe a 3 inch hole saw would do it .

And don't stick your whole arm in there reaching for it ..... use a magnet on a string.

Look under the truck, I think that panel drops down below the floor of the cab right where the cab corners rust out, might be able to make a hole there, clean out and put a large body plug in it like the cab mount plugs. I had thought it was a small plate with threads in the center that was captured by some folded over metal prongs during assembly, but CRS is setting in.
