Fuel pump going bad can cause surging and black smoke from exhaust. You have a fuel pump relay somewhere , but it is probably a bad pump.
If you're getting a pump, don't go to Auto-Zone or equiv.(several bad experiences reported).
Get a Carter or Ford pump to replace it and check all areas where air could get into lines.
ALWAYS replace fuel filter with a new pump. don-ohio (:^)
So i fixed my problem with my Aerostar. The Air charge sensor was bad the fuel pump relay was corroded and the MAF sensor was bad. Now i do have a question my vehicle has a MAP sensor but i was told it is not really functional because the spot where the Vacuum line is suppose to go has a white factory plug over it so I'm asking is it functional or not.
There was no black smoke at all and the fuel pressure is at 44 PSI still a little bit of stalling but I'm assuming that cause the computer is getting use to the new MAF sensor it starts right up now. before when it was cold it would not have any problems but when it was warmed up i would shut it off and have a hard time restarting it. Oh and no more surging.
The ACT, Air Charge Temperature sensor, measures intake air temperature, is probably located somewhere in the air intake tract, like the intake manifold.
The MAP sensor is used to sense ambient pressure on a MAF engine. That white "plug" is really a breather device that vents to the atmosphere, so don't disable it.
So i have a big Question for you guys and Gals my 1990 ford aerostar has a MAP sensor on it but there is no vacuum line going to it and the spot where the vacuum line is suppose to go has a white plug over it from the factory. So i'm asking is it functional or is it fake. Oh and the Van is fixed the Ignition control module i bought was bad so i use the one off my old aerostar (same year and same engine) it runs like a champ now.
Ok thanks for all the Help People ..
It turns out that the Ignition control module i bought was bad. I took the one form my old Aerostar and put it on and the Van runs like a champ now thanks again all..
Most national auto parts stores will loan you a fuel pressure test kit. Try Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilly's Auto Parts or Pep Boys. I don't know which stores are near by but see if you can't barrow one and then take it back after you've used it.
