Purrs like a kitten at idle, but bogs down when depressing the acc. pedal (like not enough fuel). When doing so, I hear a short whistling sound, but can't locate precicely. It sounds like it's coming from the top-rear of the engine. Not driveable, any suggestions?
Have replaced fuel filter and DPFE sensor thus far (per common problems w/this vehicle). I can hear the fuel pump engaging and I have no CEL so far.

It is funny you should have this problem as I just fixed mine today. It was doing the same thing. It ran great at idle but when running at a steady state or under very slight acceleration it would stumble. I ran it this way for about 4 weeks and the CEL finally came on. The codes suggested that my upstream oxygen sensor was having problems. I went to NAPA auto parts, bought an O2 sensor for $55, and put one on tonight and it took care of the problem. I am glad that it worked! Maybe this will help you. However, you may indeed have a vacuum leak which will do the same thing. Good luck.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing, Joe. Unfortunately, the regulator on mine is in the tank and not servicable by itself -- must be replaced along w/the fuel pump assembly. I was hoping for something less drastic.

PS My pickup had 55,000 miles on it.
Thanks for your post, John. Your situation sounds similar, but mine does more than stumble when you touch the gas. It practically dies, making it not drivable. Kind of wish that CEL would come on to give me some direction of where to look! A new O2 sensor couldn't hurt, though.
Checked the fuel pressure. It was well within specs. On the advice from a mechanic friend, I inplugged the MAS and the stalling went away. Picked up a new one yesterday. Problem solved.
Maknoll, glad to hear that you got the problem fixed! Don't you love it when you are able to resolve something like that yourself. For future reference, what did you unplug to correct the problem? Thanks!
