Can someone explain how (or if) CarPlay works with iPhones? I have an iPhone 5s (work) or SE (personal) that I can use. The 5s is with ATT and the SE is Sprint.
No matter how hard I try, I cannot find directions from Ford that say Plug phone into USB port (which one) and do X.
In addition, I have heard there are hardware upgrades I might need. The truck is brand new.
I don't think the OTA update has come out that gives this functionality yet. My late '16 build has Android Auto, but I don't think it has CarPlay yet either. We were promised an update, it's just a matter of when. I have also heard about the necessity of a hardware upgrade for CarPlay but I don't think that's officially announced either since the update isn't out.
If you have SYNC 3 with version 2.0 and have an Android phone you don't have to do anything to get Android Auto . If you have 2.0 and have a Apple phone you need to upgrade the USB module ( PART # HC3Z-19A387-B ) . If you have version 1 you will need to upgrade software ( upgrade will be version 2.2) for both phones and USB hub for the Apple phone.
I've used some basic features. The apple phone needs to be connected via the USB port to access phone features via the trucks controls while Android is supposed to work through Blue Tooth.
There are a limited number of apps that actually show up & work on the trucks productivity screen. The only ones I've used are Spotify & Pandora. I hope more apps are added in the future, like Apple Maps.
I use the "Hey Siri" voice command all the time for traffic, weather and directions. Even if my phone is only connected by Blue Tooth, Siri will mute the radio while I'm giving my commands.
I tried Apple Maps, Google Maps & Waze, none of these navigation apps use the trucks productivity screen. If I my phone is connected by USB the navigation instructions will come through the trucks speakers.
My Android stays in my shirt pocket and all the phone features are done over Blue Tooth. I'm very new to this but I know I can make calls by voice and see my address book and it will read texts to me. I'm assuming that all 2016's have Sync 3.
Making phone calls, displaying text messages and playing music works with both types of phones via Bluetooth. Those features existed in previous versions of sync as well as sync 3.
In short Sync-3 is a new platform with a new OS and touch screen. The UI is more responsive to commands. The commands are more like a smart phone so it's easy to use. Sync-3 also opens up a way for applications to interface with the screen in the car. We should start seeing more applications coming out in the the future. It is possible in Sync 3 for navigation software on your phone to use the screen in your car.
That's nice, I have to unlock my phone myself for some features. Siri won't give me directions home unless the phone is unlocked. I guess it's a safety feature. It seems the Android works better with Sync 3 today or is the grass greener on the other side
