Good day everyone. It seems like I'm hearing something new. I was wondering if anyone else with a failure heard this. It seems as though I can listen to the turbo spool down with what I would consider a lot of noise. Did anyone else who had a turbo fail notice any spool down noise after shutdown. I seems like I'm getting a little more turbine whine also but not much maybe I just haven't heard it with the windows up and a/c on. But is seems like a definite rumble after shutdown until the turbine stops at least that is what I think it is since I can come up with no other thing that would do that. I ask because I have 4000 miles left on my extended warranty. It's an early 11(feb) with 96000 miles

Reason: Extra info
I believe I did on mine. I have a cold air intake so I can hear the turbo spinning after shutdown (when I am out of the truck standing beside it, if I turn it off and get out quick).
I THINK mine was getting louder before it failed. After shutdown, when I was out of the truck I could hear it sounded different. As it was spinning down it started making a shuttering kind of sound (if that makes any sense).
I didn't notice anything different when operating, just after shutdown.
I really didn't want to post this because I don't want to make you paranoid. I could be totally out to lunch and maybe it was no different at all .....
I was running H&S early (high boost) tunes (38+ PSI) for about 100,000 km when mine went so it had been worked hard for a long time and was no real shock when it did finally let go.
Mine is a job 1 2011 built in mid 2010 so it had the first gen turbo and bearing.
thanks I wouldn't be as worried if it was just a whine on spool down as its more of a grumble. I think ill just make an appointment to have it looked at. I guess the worst that will happen is they tell me its fine and then it fails right after the warranty. just hoping that somebody heard something before theirs failed so I had a little more to argue with if needed.
Remove the air hose at the turbo and reach in with your finger tips. Grab the impeller and wiggle the impeller. If it scrapes the housing or has a lot of wobble, its bearings are bad.
should of thought of that thank you. Holy crap just figured I'd look at a video to see the process for getting at the turbo figuring it would be like the 6.0 maybe a little worse. I WAS WRONG. looks like you need to remove and awful lot to get to the intake side

Agreed, this plus the noise you are hearing just tells you the end is near. Could be another 4-8000 miles till it craps out.
I believe the 2011 and early 2012s use a ceramic bearing in the turbo that is prone to failing. If you YouTube 6.7 turbo failing you can find the video from powerstroke that talks about this.
Wow I can't believe you guys are talking about this wondering if I'm starting to have turbo failure on my 2016 at only 38,000 miles. It does the same thing especially after plowing the last few days you shut it down and you hear like a roaring sound you can hear the turbo slowing down coming from the hood especially if you get out of the cab fast guess. I'll have to have the dealer look at it, the truck is totally stock as far as the engine goes. It's actually running great lots of power plenty of boost maybe it's always made that noise and I've just never noticed it? It started this summer and then went away I thought it was just the good oil I was using and the turbo was just spining down after the engine shut off don't know if that's correct? Anyway any more information would be welcome take care
Don't want to hijack the thread thanks for the reply perhaps I should open a new thread? I'm having it looked at today needs brake work anyway. What should I tell them to look for or is the sound enough with a turbo failing? I know on the farm some of the tractors that had turbo failure started making Screech sounds but, I never heard them spin down after the engine was shut off summer or winter this started at 38,000 miles now at 46000. Oil change every 4500 miles and new air filter Ford Original Part some people think it's too much but, with all the dirt and dust driving I keep it clean. The tubes going to the turbo are always spotless I'm amazed how good those filters really work after learning my lesson with the oil-based filters on my 2009 that allowed a lot of dirt to get by after doing the Vaseline trick will never do that again LOL. take care
No problem on the hijacking, the more info the better, but when you get done plowing do you let the turbo spool down before shutting down. If its run hard you should let it spool down before powering down. I'm hearing mine after idling for about 30 secs then shutting the engine off. that's what has me worried.

The turbo is always spinning. Hearing it spin after shutdown is normal.
Well for better or worse I got the answer today turbo is bad, the only good part is depending on how you look at it once it's fixed I will have a new turbo. They should be able to have it done by next Thursday sort of sucks for the holiday but better off than being stuck on the side of the road. Also apparently I'm getting too old it wasn't just the noise of spinning down it was apparently grinding on the housing the young mechanic heard the noise every time it shut down. As far as what could have caused it ? definitely always let the engine cool down after heavy trailers and of course plowing. Maintenance schedule oil change every 4500 miles new air filter with every oil change. I'll let you know next Thursday how I make out, hopefully I can snap some pictures I'm off for two weeks it picked a good time to go south LOL. I'm just amazed at how good the truck is running with a bad Turbo goes to show you should have had it looked at this summer when it started was just too busy with work and apparently it wasn't that loud take care
