Its a funny shaped braket inside the column. It was made of cheap metal and now its haunting Ford. If they have the right part it only takes a couple of hours to install. I had mine done at a dealership was only like $75 to replace. I probably could have done it myself, BUT I started thinking of the airbag and how much it would be to have re-installed, in case I set it off. Thats why a dealer did it. I don't have the pn# with me anymore, call Ford customer service and have your vin checked, most likely it will fall under the catagory to be fixed. Have them send you a letter, or have the work done then send them a copy and they will send a refund check, but check with them first to make sure yours is covered. My ignition seemed "loose" real easy but every now and then it would catch and seem notchy, then I started it one day and it wouldn't shut off. Thats my story. If you need to know more email me at jrjohnson717(No Email Addresses In Posts!).
hey guys, just for future reference, if your truck won't shut off with the key you can remove the trim peice at the bottom of the column (pretty easy, only has two phillips screws that is accesible from underneath). this will uncover the actuator rod. you can then shut off the truck by hand by sliding the rod back. you can also start it this way and maybe save yourself a tow bill, we all know how expensive that can get. I have had both a 90 and a 91 that has had this problem. pretty easy fix and seems to be a fairly common problem.
