Can anyone explain the EGR System in simple terms? We have replaced 2/4 sensors, now it's the system? I was quoted around $400 for part, $350 for labor. Truck is 2011 F250 diesel. Thanks
What it does is takes inert exhaust gasses, cools them, and adds them into the intake to reduce the amount of free oxygen available in the combustion process. This reduces the amount of NOx formed. This is a short, simple answer. I am sure others can give you the long answer.
One thing to consider is deleting the EGR and all the other emissions, IF you are out of warrantee, and don't have emission testing in your area. The estimate you have to fix the EGR is about 1/2 of a delete system installed.
I am NOT a proponent of removing the emissions systems, but I think its good to look at all you options before you spend your money.
I am planning on deleting my 2011 soon, but mainly because of the extra fuel dumped into the exhaust during the DPF cleaning cycle, and the possibility that it COULD have an negative effect on the cracked/broken valves
I would also try and Clean the EGR cooler and associated piping. In a somewhat related story... My friend had a CEL that came on every 10,000 Miles or so on his 454, at that time he needed to clean the EGR valve. Worth a try In my opinion.
