Hi everyone - I registered just to make this post. A friend of mine is selling /giving away a truck but he's about 1000 miles away so I can't look in person. He doesn't know much about trucks/engines and I don't know much about Ford engines....
What engine is this? Any ideas? It's a 1969 F100. I understand there are 3 different options for 1969.
Welcome to FTE and The Bumpside Kingdom!
"Bumpside" references the body line hump down the sides of the 67/72 Ford trucks. It is either a 360 of 390 like Bill mentioned. If the truck is a 4X4 it would have come with a 360 when new. If it is a 4X2 then it could be either of the two. 360 is a good lugger engine and the 390 is a torque monster even stock.
Ah OK. I'd like to turn it into kind of a rat style truck. The paint is in pretty terrible shape but he put on a flomaster exhaust so it's got a great sound to it. I'm hoping to get a relatively cheap paint job to get it black and have a cheap fun truck to ride around in.
I'll ask about the VIN.
Pictures of exterior - he has replaced the tires and wheels since these photos.

Thanks for the help.
The first thing, I noticed in this picture is that 40yr. old looking style dizzy vacuum
advance. Mostly it needs replacing so check it for leaking diaphragm. Replace as needed.

How can you tell 40 year old vac advance? Ford never painted them. The crappy engine paint over could be fairly recent.Still would be an item you check out in a thorough tune up.
Also fwiw and not real reliable but there was originally a metal tag under a coil bolt that said what engine it was. Most of the time it never gets put back on if the coil, intake, or engine were changed.

I was close Rich. The 1st thing that caught my eye was that aftermarket in-line fuel filter.
OP, Originally there would have been a screw on canister on the bottom of the fuel pump with a cartridge style fuel filter in there. The fuel pump may have been changed sometime in the truck's life with a Car style that doesn't have this fuel filter. If your truck still has the can on the bottom of the fuel pump I suggest you unscrew that can and make sure there's not an old plugged up filter in there.

C3AZ-9350-R & U F100/350 352/360/390 & car FE 'Carter' pumps replaced by D2TZ-9350-A 'Airtex' pump...which as I recall, doesn't have the C4AZ-9365-B (FG-1A) cartridge filter.
Some people are unaware that the original fuel pumps have the canister type paper cartridge fuel filter, so they install an in-line fuel filter.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch...the cartridge fuel filter probably hasn't been changed in years, so it's getting more clogged up every day.
Don't paint it! You want a Rat Rod looking Truck, keep it like that polish it a little and then clear coat it. That truck has earned that look. I'm doing that with my project (68 F-250). I am going to buy new trim mouldings though, mine are beaten up and some are missing.
Enjoy, it's always cool when your in a Home Depot or Lowes and someone in a new Ford stops you and ask what year your driving. It drives my wife crazy, since she wanted me to buy a newer model.

1967, 1968 before serial number C56,001 have 1 1/4" wide upper body side mouldings.
1968 from serial number C56,001, 1969, 1970/72 Sport Custom have 1 1/2" wide upper body side mouldings.
Clean filters, clean fuel, clean oil, clean air cleaner, fresh plug wires, new distributor cap, new rotor, new condenser and new plugs, gaped, and timing set will and that truck will bring you home, and beyond. If it still has points & condenser, they need to be new too.. All should be available at the local auto parts. Function first, form later. No use having a purdy truck that does not run. Good luck to you amigo, and welcome to the Bump Kingdom..
