Tire clearance issues

Four Wheeler magazine, May 2003, had a great article on most of the suspension kits available for Ford trucks. A company called AutoFab makes a 16 inch wheel travel kit, with only a 4 inch "lift".

That seems to be the way to go, if you have the $$$K's and ever want to race the Bronco. They(AutoFab) use axle beams that are bent upward to gain the lift instead of re-location brackets. They have some new fiberglass body panels, too. If you've never visited the website, it's worth the look!

The Auto Fab system is neat for sure but way out of my price range. I have spent quite a bit of time researching the many options the past few days. I really thought I was set on a 4 inch system such as a Rancho or Skyjacker, but the "you may not ever get a good alignment after this" footnotes I am reading are more than a little concerning. At least Rancho is being upfront with the warnings I guess. You could really burn up some tires fast with the camber out. It appears there are camber kits available to easily correct the 2 inch leveling coils. At least I can do that much. There are many good options to lift the rear.

This would be a lot more fun if I could just go nuts and build an offroad toy without regard to functionality of a daily driver and a tow vehicle.

Tire clearance issues

Before I did my lift on my 93 I ended up having to use my 33s I had in storage since the 32's I had were toast. My biggest problem with having these on my truck was spacing the front bumper out enough so the tires wouldn't hit it. I did get some problems with the tires hitting the radius arms but that was only at full lock. Still do kinda but when it does happen it's bearly noticeable.

For these to work I used the following setup...

33 x 12.5" Remington Wide Brutes (good tire)
Ford Centerline knock-offs that measure out to 15x7" Dont know the backspacing though.

93 Ford Bronco with a spaced out bumper (3 3/4" washers)

Skyjacker has 2 inch lift coils and a caster/camber kit for proper alignment. I am hesitant to go the 4 inch or higher in that most kits you have to drill holes in the housing and weld brackets. Potential cracks I've heard. Of course, lots of people have 4 and higher, I'm sure with no problems, but my 88 Bronco already has 21 inches of sill clearance, plenty for 4 wheeling in the desert. Every inch up adds increased roll over risk as it is. I'm going to add the 2 inch Skyjacker lift coils along with the alignment kit and see how it goes.

Thanks Frogger and Desert. Appreciate the insight. I believe I am just going to go 2 inch coils at this time. As much as I would love the looks of a 4 inch kit, the costs of doing it right and potential problems aren't good for me at this time. I got a big dollar 53 F100 in the garage that is a few months from done after 4 years of steady work. I really got to apply the resources to it this fall. The wife wouldn't be pleased if my Bronco turns into a money eating garage queen I can't drive at the moment. Promised her I wouldn't go too nuts on the Bronco until the old truck is rolling steady. I want some Pro Comp Extreme rims. That will be expensive enough. Not to mention the risk of going 4 inches on a daily driver and tow vehicle. The 2 inch coils and perhaps a one inch body lift presents less risk at the moment. It will sure as heck be cheaper and I could undo either lift procedure in a short time in the unlikely event it didn't work out. A four inch kit is a little more permanent.

Now my only significant decision will be 32x11.50s or 33X12.50s. It sounds like I could get by with either though.

I put a six inch sky jacker in my 94 bronco. The suggested tire size for that lift is a 35". I only went with 33's because any bigger begin to minimize the amount of flex you can actually get out of the suspension. The 33's are plenty of tire for off-roading, and the way they will tuck up into the wheel wells without body interferance allow serious articulation. They still look good too, without a tire stuffed wheel well appearance.

I would suggest getting 33x12.50. I think it is a much more standard size and you might find a lot more tire choices, as well in a pinch (a flat) a 33x12.50 might be easier to find. Good luck!

hey buckinbronco95, I am looking to put 33x10.50s on my stock bronco as well. Did you have any problems with the bumper? Did you need to space that out a bit?

When I measured my Bronco, it looks like the fender wheel opening itself will take 33s, but at 35 or greater the opening looks too small. The tire extends beyond the arc of the fender. What I imagine now what has to be done is limit wheel travel to avoid fender contact, or cut the fender and add fender flares. So for 35s you may have to a 4 to 6 inch lift, and maybe longer bump stops to keep the wheel from rising up high enough to hit the fender. Or stick with 33s.

nah... i had no problems with the bumper rubbing... actually i had no problems at all with the 33's... we even threw the same tires on my friends 88 bronco... no rubbing there either. so i would assume u wont have any problems. when i went to the 35's i put in a 3" lift... kinda wish i went higher but theres still time for that

As an owner of a "new" Bronco, there seems to be lots of better stuff available.

For example:
Electro Luminescent Reverse Gauge Kit
Make your gauges as wild as the rest of your ride with our reverse electro-luminescent gauge kits!

White faced gauges by day - changeable luminescent blue at night. You get solid state reliability and the hottest look in gauges you'll find anywhere. Changes between multiple blue colors at the push of a button. Replaces your factory gauges, wiring is required.
