As l drive my 62 1/2 ton down the road l wonder if it had seatbelts when it was sold. When did they start putting them in vehicles?
Thank you!!
Lap seat belts were either a factory option or a dealer installed accessory until 1966, when they became standard equipment (F100/350: driver & passenger sides only).
First vehicle to offer lap seat belts: 1950 Nash Rambler.
In 1956, Ford offered an optional 'safety package' for cars that included a padded dash and 'airplane type' (metal to webbing) lap seat belts.
Most people weren't concerned about safety, so it didn't sell worth a hoot.
If U have not purchased the belts yet may want to consider going with driver's side retractable type, I got tired of closing the door on the standard bench type?
There grandfathered in. Didn't come with Don't have to have. I have couple no seat belt trucks have never been bothered by the coppers or inspection station.
Seat belt law requirements vary by state. You would just have to look up your state's specific seat belt laws to know what does or what doesn't apply and on what vehicle and when it applies.
In Arkansas, any passenger car built before January 1, 1968 is not required to have seat belts. All other vehicles (pickup trucks, etc.) built before January 1, 1972 are not required to have seat belts.
My '69 F100 Ranger has factory seat belts but, by Arkansas law, it's exempt and not required to have them per Title 27, Chapter 37, Subchapter 7, sub-section 27-37-702 (1).
As ND stated - option. At least here in California. I was contested on this a few years ago and went to Court. Officer stopped me for burned out brake light and issue's me a fix-it ticket. Than he writes me a ticket for no set belts. I told him the truck didn't come with them. He looks me straight in the eyes and smiles saying "yes they did". SO, I went to court. Cop wasn't happy when I presented the judge with the original window sticker option sheet. Under 'seat belts, it says "NONE". I told the judge that I offered to show the cop the sheet and he said he wasn't interested. Judge dismissed the case. NOW comes the good part. I gave the judge my bill for my time I wasted coming to court. Three weeks later I received a check from the city. ALL LEGAL if you win your case.
I have 4 unibodys at my house and 2 have belts and 2 do not. Like l said l went by a hiway patrol office here in oklahoma and talked to a very knowledgeable and nice Oklahoma State Trooper and he said l was good to go without the belts.
