4 Barrel Question

I live in Colorado Springs and just purchased a 60 with a 292 2 barrel. I think I want to put a 4 barrel on it and found someone with a manifold and Holley 600-650 carb. I will put a new kit in it and wondering what size jets it should have for our altitude (almost a mile high).

Carb jetting

422cfm max size if you run engine out to 5000rpm ( not me!!). I run a Holley 470 truck avenger on a 60 over 292 with 312 crank and rods. Even then that's overkill

I bigger carb without bigger valves and dual exhaust is not worth it. Engine breathing is too tight. Even with those mods it is borderline worth it.

I only run a Holley 390 on my Y. I had to increase the main jet size it was a little too lean, at your altitude it usually requires leaner jetting. You could use the bigger carb and if it is a vacuum secondaries it will probably never use them and it will be just like having a 2 barrel. A carb that size will probably be jetted to rich for your use but thats an easy fix.

Many eons ago I put a new Holley 1850 600 cfm on a stock reman 312 I had in a 57 F350 with 5.13 gears. It was my daily driver. It ran great at all speeds and got 12-13 mpg so I never messed with it. But then we had better gas and the speed limit was 55. I'd say run it and see how it runs. You might be happy with it just like it is. You can tune on it later to suit your conditions and driving style.

It's not just jetting to be concerned with, the power valve (economiser) should be stepped down in size. Otherwise carb will run pig rich all the time, they open at a specific engine vacuum. When we went up Pikes Peak when I was a little kid I remember towards the top, all the flatlander cars were leaking raw fuel out the tail pipe. Now I know why.

600-650 is too much for an otherwise stock 292 though as long as it is vacuum secondaries, it will probably work.

Start with the carburetor configured as Holley would have had it and tune from there. It is impossible for anyone to tell you what your combination, environment, and driving style will need.
