Transfer Case drops into Neutral

Hello
Thank you in advance for the help.

I have a 1998 Explorer XLT.
4.0 SOHC.
The problem is when I drive above 50mph and I let off the accelerator the transfer case will drop into neutral. It will generally reengage if I coast to below 20 mph but not always.

Today on the way home from work it did it and if I switch the dash switch from auto to 4x4 High it goes back in and stays in even if I switch it back to auto. It does not always drop out. If I stay below 50 mph it does not seem to do it.

I just bought the explorer and I knew it had a problem when I bought. I first thought it was the transmission but it did it just as I got to work Sunday and I coasted into the drive as it would not go back into gear. I stopped and put the transmission in park and the parking paul ground telling me the transmission was still turning the tail shaft so I put it back in neutral and started playing with the dash switch which got it working again.

Any ideas would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks
