About a year ago replacement tires were discussed in a thread here. In September, I purchased a set of Michelin Defender LTX M/S, LT 275/70R18. I completed a 1200 mile trip towing and a bunch more miles unloaded. They handled very well towing, they are quiet, I have not seen a change in mpg up or down yet and they have a more aggressive tread than the originals. Now to see how they last.
I just got out of the older LTX M/S'2's... they wore awful.. I don't know why.. I had them near the 80lb psi and the outer bands wore..like the were under inflated... I know the Defenders have a different rubber compound..
I was going to go back to the ContiTrac TR's as they always wore well for me.. And the tread depth is 2 32's more then the LTX's.
Capt Caper, mine are wearing bad too - not a big fan of 20" tire wear. My 18" wore great and still had a lot of life in them with over 40k miles on them. I don't think that these will make it much past 25k miles.
Thinking of DuraTracs as a replacement. I still want at least an M+S rated tire.
Mine are wearing even... just quick. But the roads here are sand/gravel in the winter and with the ice they spin a lot... In the summer, a lot of the roads I drive are chip seal which is like sandpaper... I would need to compare with someone else who is always driving in AK to see if mine are wearing fast, slow or normal.
At a gas station on the AlCan I saw a lady driving up from Montana to do road construction work - she was about 1500 or so miles into her journey, just bought new tires in Montana before she left. They were bald - like wear bars showing bald... That was a bad year where the entire ALcan was either getting ripped up or that rough chip seal. Luckily she had a tread life warranty on them. I was driving a rental at the time, I could tell I took a fair amount of tread off the tires too.
I am currently running Nitto Ridge Grapplers and absolutely love them. Excellent off road traction but quiet on the road. They are a Hybrid tire, so far have worn nicely.
I'm running Michelin Defender LTX M/S on my F350 FX4 DRW. We towed our 5th wheel from DFW to Alabama then up to Gettysburg and back. AS well as plenty of local miles logged. The tires are showing no ill wear, matter of fact they look like new.
