I have done tons of research on the 6.0s and really want to get one. I would prefer a 06 07 model year but a lot of them are still above my price range. I have seen a lot of 05s. Are the 05s worth buying? I know all years can have issues but the 06-07s are the least problematic. What do you guys think?
Owning an '03 motor, I am biased. However, I would not rule out the early build. Fact is, many changes to later model years were cost cutting measures, not improvements for the benefit of end users.
Some of these later model changes are plastic parts substitutions, like the cold side CAC tube and rocker arm clips.
My original HPOP looks and performs like new, approaching 200k mi. Perhaps these pumps have a bad reputation because of the weak oil screens breaking, under the oil cooler. The newer pumps arose due to a change to a larger, wavy high pressure oil rail. The early build has a simple log oil rail.
The HPO system is less likely to leak, not having the STC fitting and dummy plug problems of later models.
The water pump is smaller though, but no complaints.
I get lots of positive comments about my turbo whistle. The '03 is a unique animal.
The ICP sensor is behind IPR valve, on HPOP cover. Not on valve cover, like later models.
Also, the intake manifold crosses over the HPOP cover, so sometimes an '03 has more disassembly required.
EGR cooler is round and reputed to be better than later models. I still had 2 fail though.
The HFCM has a warmer as part of the fuel conditioning, deleted for later years.
On down side, an '03 will be 4 years older than an '07 for all the parts that are on the truck.
Wanted to plug the early build a little, as I feel they are dismissed without all the facts.
I prefer the super rare 2004.5s that have their own mix of parts. 6.0s are good trucks especially now considering what we know. If you delete the EGR cooler and never tune it, you will probably never have blown head gaskets. 2005+ have the standpipe and dummy plug issues.
I have never ruled out the 03 04s but I like the interiors of the 05-07 not that there is much of a difference. I live in Delaware and there are slim pickings around here.
I would go with the 05 and latter for the higher GVW and CGVW, stiffer frame, larger brakes, coil front springs with tighter turning radius, and lees prone to head gasket problems
