starting fluid

Still trying to get this Eseries to run. Last thing was taking fuel lines off the regulator to confirm fuel flow to heads and it all checked out.

Just occurred to me that I could maybe confirm that fuel is definitely not my problem by using starting fluid to provide fuel. If it starts, that would mean I got fuel issues, if it doesn't, I don't.

Does that make sense? I know starting fluid is not recommended, but would a one-time check be risky? Never used SF before - do I just spray in in the air intake while cranking with KO? Do I need to wait until my oil pressure, ICP pressure hits 500 before spraying?

is there any SG datapoint that confirms my FICM relay is working? Like if I'm getting Sync or FMP/FLP or ICP/IPR readings does it mean my relay is working?

Starting Fluid + Hot Glow Plugs = BANG, not in a good way.
DieselTechRon dod a video on how to use the stuff if your are ever tempted.
You have to let the glow plugs time out and cool off or you will get an explosion.
It is just never a good idea to use starting fluid.
One way you can check the fuel pressure is pull the rear gallery plug on the head
and plumb in a pressure gauge. That should be easy with the doghouse off and you
could place a "T" with a ball valve so that you can bleed any air off.

No SGII Xguages that I have ever seen for the FICM relay.
If your getting injector clatter at pre-start then the relay should allow you to start.

Disconnect the glow plugs and it's not an issue

Thanks, guys. I may try to test the fuel pressure the way Sean suggests. Didn't realize I could get my guage connected at the back of the head - that would be a hole lot easier. Still, based on how much fuel shoots out of the regulator, I just don't think (there I go doing that again) it's a fuel issue. And based on Sean's advice about the injector clatter, I'm pretty sure my FICM relay is just fine. Trying to see if my brother can take off work and come in town to help me pull it to the dealer for a diagnosis. Will have to rent a pickup to do it, and then again after the diagnosis, but that'll be cheaper than the tow trucks.

Be careful towing that beast. No brakes and no power steering.
Almost like towing a tank but a tank won't roll as much and
crush the tow rig.

LOL, you're telling me. I had my buddy pull my other ambulance to the storage yard, that was a mistake. He got up to 40-50mph, I'm riding the brake trying to slow him down, waving my arm. But, we made it.

May have one of our brothers coming by with his AE to help me out so I'm holding off to give him a chance to work me in his schedule. Really need to get this running asap though.
