I have a 1997 Ford Ranger fuel injected v6 4wd p/u. The problem with the truck is will start fine in warm weather but today with 45 degrees it would not start. It turns over great but acts like it is starving for fuel. This happens any time temp. is low. I would like to know if anyone has had this problem, if so how was it corrected? Thanks John Alt
Things I'd try:
step on the gas pedal a bit when cranking- may be sticky and need to open more when colder.
check fuel pressure - the pump may have 'morning sickness' and a bit too much internal friction when cold, and lead to low pressure or volume
try cycling the key from OFF to ON, pause, to OFF, and repeat, making the pump cycle on each trip from OFF to ON, perhaps breaking it loose?
check the resistance of the coolant temp sensor and compare to the 'temp:resistance' table
check the resistance of the incoming air temp sensor and 'ditto the above'
The computer should 1)open the IAC(sticky?) for a faster cold idle speed and 2)increase fuel injection time based on coolant and air temp. When it does start, do you have an increased idle speed until it is warmed up? If not, either the temp sensor or the IAC may be flaky, unless the computer is not 'commanding' a faster idle.

Its the guy with the 1997 Ranger. I read about checking fuel pressure with pressure gauge, but where do I place the gauge to check pressure. Also is the fuel pump on or in fuel tank? Thanks for all the info to repair my truck. John Alt (coolpoprocks)
Most fuel injected engines have a 'fuel rail' that is an assembly of tubing and fittings that connects the fuel line from the pump to each of the injectors. Mounted to the fuel rail is, in most cases, a Schraeder valve, similar to a tire valve stem fitting, that allows a fuel pressure gauge to be screwed on. The valve may be covered with what looks like a valve stem cap you'd see on a tire.
The fuel pump is tank mounted in most cases, unless it is mounted to the frame rail. You should hear the fuel pump run (slight whine) at the time you first turn the key from OFF to ON. It should run for 3-5 seconds and stop, insuring the fuel rail is full of fuel under pressure and available for spritzing when the key is turned to START.
