door rust repair?

Hi all, i did searches trying to find how people have tackled the rust repairs on the 56 f100 doors, but everything seems old, outdated, and galleries are no longer available. How can I get the doors cleaned up? I have a harbor freight sandblaster, but obviously, the door wont fit in it. Are there chemicals I can use at home? Should I try to see what a local shop would charge to media blast them? It seems that everything I see, the repairs would cost hundreds of dollars, as new lower inner and outer skins are over $80. My truck will be a driver, but would like to get it looking good without spending a fortune. I will upload pics later. Also, trying to plan my attack for them. Whats the best way to upgrade to bear claw latches and keyless entry, while maintaining the original handles and locks? Thanks all!

Clean out all the loose debris in the inside of the door and pour Corroseal into the seams. With some luck you may stop the rust from spreading but there is no getting around the need to open up the seams and cutting out the rot if you want to stop it. I have been successful at removing sections from the corners and welding in new metal where the rot hasn't progressed across the whole seam but it is a crap shoot at best. For the latches get the Altman latch kit for the F100 from Trique manufacturing...Midfifty carries it as well.

This is the easiest latch upgrade. I tried the budget route, and after 2 years replaced them with these. Seems kinda pricey at first look, but well worth the money. Very good instructions and installation.

Door repair

Tom

I repaired my doors by first sand blasting them, there is a place near me that you rent by the minute. (Caution not to spend too long on one area or direct blasting as it will heat and warp the metal).

Do you have a reverse electrolysis shop near you; I had my fenders done this way which saved a lot of work.

As stated, the rust that resides inside the door needs to be addressed, try pouring/spraying treatment into door if it will hold and is not all rusted out.

Here is one pic of rust damage around my door hinge that I removed and welded up. Can you buy 18 or 20 gauge metal to repair the door skins ?

Rather than bolt the mounting plate to the door I opt to weld it in place. It works either way but the welded option looks much cleaner...

Beautiful job Charlie, looks like it came that way. You can bet that if I ever tried doing that, it sure wouldn't look anything close to that. LOL I really appreciate the skill many of you poses.

boy, i wish we had a place that would rent out a space for me to sandblast and paint around here. Long island is such a crappy place for self serve businesses.

And Charlie, your door came out great. I can currently get those latches for $225. I may have to find the money for them
