Borg warner trans problem

Borg warner trans problem

I have a 85' f150 with a 300-6 and a borg warner four speed with an overdrive. My problem is that it won't stay in third gear and second has a slight grinding sound while it's in gear. My question is why and does it need rebuilt and if so where can I find a rebuild kit for it?

It's not a Borg Warner trans. You have the Ford RTS TS-OD Top Shift 4 Speed Overdrive.

Popping out of 3rd gear and grinding in 2nd gear, the brass synchronizer blocker rings are worn.

If its grinding during the shift to second it could be the blocking rings, but not the popping out of gear in third. The brass rings are only used to get the gear spinning during the shift for smooth engagement. Once the gear is engaged they become inactive. Popping out of gear could be caused by worn engagement teeth on the gear itself, worn or bent shifter fork, broken detent spring, or excessive main shaft end play. If its making a grinding noise all the time in second gear I would suspect either bearings or badly worn gears.
