How can you tell if 1st gear is a granny gear?

The easy way to tell, is to put it in first, let the clutch out, climb out of the truck, take a leak and when your done, the truck shouldn't have traveled more an a few inches.
Not really, but that's the idea. In my granny trannys, first gear tached out at about 15mph.

If you had a granny gear, it would be non-synchronized and you'd take off from a stop in 2nd. You either have a Clark or SROD model 4 speed tranny. A trans with a granny gear is either a T-18 or an NP435.

Thank you very much. I didn't think it had the granny gear since it has OD. I don't think my speedometer is terribly accurate, but 1st gear tops at around 20-25 mph.

I had an 83 F-150 4x4 with a 300-6 and an NP435 trans with granny 1st. I used to live near this unpaved hill that had an 8% grade that was about 1/4 mile from the bottom to the top. It was a huge hill. I could throw the truck in 4-low, trans in granny low, and walk down the hill and wait, wait, wait, for it to come to me. I don't think it even went over 2 mph max going downhill.

I believe that anything from 1987 and later should either have a 5 speed or a 4 speed granny. Everything I've seen seems to show they discontinued the 4 speed overdrive transmissions before the 1987 model year.
