i am looking into buying a 76 crew cab with a 390, its 2wd how many horses do these have stock and what is the availability for aftermarket performance parts possible nice edelbrock stuff? do u have any idea how fast these are and if 390s are good engines and if they vary in horsepower or what the power might be in this form... thansk for the help all thanks a lot
Hello morganburger
I am not sure of the exact horsepower. But i think stock is around 250. dont quote me you might do a search. In my opinion and i am sure im not alone the 390 is a great motor and with a cam, intake and a good 4 barrel carb they can be very fast. the edelbrock performer intake is around $275 new but you can find parts fairly easy. Hope this helps.
Bigern
how much do you want to spend. you can get 450HP andd 480Torque! Edelbrock has a 418hp performer rpm setup. that cost about 2000.00 from summit. That does not include any parts for the bottom end.

well i dont want to go with performer rpm considering that what u said for around 450hp is probly including heads, carb, intake, the works... not camshaft, etc etc..... i will look in my edelbrock catalog i got today now thanks for your help... i might just go with performer... a little more mild and setup more for lower rpm's any oother suggestions ?
Consider buying just the performer 600cfmCarb$229, Performer RPM intake $239, Performer RPm Cam $154 and Hedman headers for $159. Under $800 will get you a really strong 390. I don't think you will like the Performer intake it isn't much better than a stock 4-bbarrel intake. Besides the Performer package isn't much cheaper. use the stock heads. maybe biggeer exhaust valves and some porting will work just fine.
yes but then again isnt a cam a BIATCH to put in there, carb and intake is a piece of cake and isnt a 600cfm a little low on the air flor? or just about right maybe a 650? ...
Those 600cfm will flow plenty of air. It does sound kind of whimpy for a big block. But if you want a 650 they seem to cost about $330 or so. And 250 hp is overrated, probally more like 190hp.

Something else to consider is the CR in those years was really bad thats why the HP was soo low.Just switching from those 410 pistons to 360 ones would make a BIG change.
Hey guys
I was just wondering if the performer rpm cam would require you to change push rod length or go to adjustable rocker assembly? Just wondering cause i am hopfully gonna build me a 390 next year.
you will need something like CRN-34772-16
Ford: 352-428 FE, 1.76 ratio, shaft mount, hardened steel, Ductile Iron rocker arm kit...
$199.95 These are ajustable and have roller tips. You will also need new pushrods CRN-34645-16
Ford: 332-428 FE, stock length, hydraulic lifters and adjustable rockers, 3/8 in. diameter, 9.234 in. long, pu...
$89.50 These are only to give you an idea of what you need. I can't personally recomend these products. But they are Crane.
Being a FE nut, the FIRST thing I do is to replace the oil pump drive shaft. Get that wimpy piece of stock %^#%@ out of there. You can wipe out ALL of your hard work in 1/2 sec when the shaft breaks between the oil pump and distributor ... oil pump stops, distributor keeps going and, well the motor is junk now.
If you keep the RPMS reasonable it should last a long time. IF you like to rev it, invest in getting the the 4 bolt main/cross drill work done. And by all means throw that boat anchor of the stock intake manifold away, just by loosing that 90 lbs you will be happy. Oh yah, in the mid 70's for emmission control purposes Ford purposly retarded the cam, is some states up to 10 degrees, so the advice on a different cam and gears is very good. Loose the thermo reactors and air pump too.
Man those long stroke FE's sound sweet with true duals. It will set off every car alarm as u pass them.
all out street performance, come on what else is 2wd good for right guys!! look at my signature, and as far as 250hp being overratted i totally agree..
I agree but you never know what people want to do with their trucks. A 750CFM will probly make you happy. If you don't want mess with the cam at least get a timing set that isn't retarded. You will not get one from your local parts store becuase all timing gears sold now are retarded for smog control. Get a aftermarket adjustable set.
