Question performance and chips

I was curious about improving engine preformance and it's effect on the ECU and EFI. I grew up with carberators and point ignitions, things you could ajust if you "hopped up" a motor. Now all my vehicles have EFI and computer controls. If I do things like headers and dual exhaust will the computer figure it out, or do I have to re-chip? How far can a person go on his motor before he has to "futs" with the electronics and EFI. I'm considering building a mild 302 motor for my 150, slightly higher compression, rv cam maybe headers, will I be ok with the stock ECU etc.? Can I get decent perfomance gains from a "perfomance" ECU and leave my engine alone. I have a journeyman ticket an engine builder but i got out of the trade 15 years ogo before ECU/EFI completely took over, now I feel a little lost. I'll also post in the computer forum.

Thanks eh,

PS: Does any one know about a "Performance Intake Timing Resistor" or "Timing Advance Resistor"? Sounds too good to be true, is it BS? Saw them on ebay.

The only resistor I know of using is for the IAT sensor on the intake tubing. I have a 4.7Kohm resistor inline with the IAT to adjust the fuel mixture to utilize 89 octane fuel. I got the resistor at radio shack for about $0.40. Whatever you found on ebay is more than likely a simple resistor like that.
