So I have been looking at Lariats and platinums online and some have 20 inch rims and others 17's. How good would the 17's be compared to the 20's? Would you get more load capacity with the shorter sidewall of the 20's? Why would you want the 17's over the 20?
17's only come on a Lariat or Platinum if you get a DRW 350. 18's are standard on a Lariat and 20's on a Platinum when going SRW. To get 17's on a SRW you'd need to order a base trim truck and the 17's do limit your ratings. They are the tire/wheel combo that would get a 6340 rear GAWR on a SRW 350.
^^^Totally correct, Rodney. In fact, I wish the base 17" size and DRW 17" size would go to an 18" because that is the limiting factor on brakes. There is essentially no clearance between the brake caliper and the inside of the rim on a truck with 17" rims. The reason why the 450 gets larger brakes is because it only comes with 19.5" rims and therefore has room for a slightly larger brake...
So that doesn't make sense then because I know I saw a description for the F350's at a dealer that stated 17 inch rims on the Lariat. Maybe they have misinformation then on their website. Check it out for yourself:

Yeah, that's misinformation. That's likely just displaying base information for the vehicle line and not what's actually on that truck. Pretty typical.
As mentioned, the only way to get 17's on a Lariat is with a DRW.
Ok that makes sense that it is misinformation. You would figure they would add the correct information otherwise why put anything up?
Dealers have gotten terrible. They don't post actual pictures of their vehicles anymore, just computer-generated 'stock' photos. Plenty of times you'll see a Lariat truck advertised in text and price, but the computer image shows an XL regular cab. Or, the image will show a higher trim model getting the customer's hopes up at the lower price. I realize a high-volume dealer might have trouble keeping up, but I like to see real images. Sometimes I think the dealers are clueless as to how many decisions to buy are based upon web research.
As Tyler said, lazy dealers. In such a tech savvy world, you'd think they'd have their websites perfect but it's the polar opposite. Makes no sense to me...
Especially for someone like me that does extended window shopping!!
One way to get the real specs is to click on the link that shows the window sticker. Most dealers I've seen will at least load the VIN and a link to the sticker. Then you can look at that instead of the auto loaded base options.

Yes, this^^. The link to the PDF window sticker is the single best thing about dealer websites. A quick glance easily tells you what a vehicle has or doesn't. I used to hate calling a dealer on the phone and saying "does it have xx feature?" only to get, "I think so," or "let me go out and check and I'll call you back."

I always do that brother! Except that the iPad that I was using did not allow that view of the page. That's the first thing I usually do is look at the window sticker.
