I have a 78 F150 Ranger, it has the 351M with power brakes. When I let my foot off the brake the master cylinder blows brake fluid out. The cover on is not enough to stop it, it will leak around it. It is coming out of the front section of the cylinder which is the rear brakes. I have turned the drums due to wear and adjusted the brakes. It has a rebuilt vaccum boost and master cylinder. I have not been able to find the brake down of the master cylinder to see what is in it. Does it have a resistor to reduce the rate of return of the fluid? Has anyone seen this before and know what it will take to fix it?
I had already replaced the master cyclinder once and it did not help. I went to a different place and got one to try it. It still comes out if the lid is off but the lid seems to seal it off. The plunger from the vaccum boost may need to be adjusted some because it seems that the pedal has to be pushed a little too far to brake good. Any ideal what the length of the plunger is? I used a vaccum to bleed the brakes since it saves the wifes leg. It seems to me that it does a better job. Thanks for the help.
If you don't want to make a gauge, just measure the depth of the master cylinder pushrod hole (I use a phillips head screwdriver). Then measure the MC flange depth, and subtract it from the previous measurement. You should come up with about 1" to 1 1/8" for the final dimension. This is the length of the pushrod that should stick out from the booster front flange.
I always reduce this final measurement by 1/16", to make sure that there is no residual pressure on the master cylinder when the brake is released.
I have a Haynes manual and did not find anything an adjusting the pushrod. Thanks for the info on adjusting it. I'll be out of town for a few days and will try it next week when I get back.
I got the rod adjusted and the brakes seem to be working fine, with no leaks. Since I had changed the master cyclinder once and it still leaked I thought it might be something else. I was not driving it so it was several months before I exchanged it so it should have been from a differant shipment. Thanks for the help.
