Hey guys, I'm looking into getting a leftover 2016 F250. I haven't seen or heard of many issues with these trucks? Am I missing something???? Just curious, as this would be my first heavy duty truck...
+1 on 4.30's. I have 3.73's, dad ordered his with 4.30's. His is a much better driving experience and gets better mileage in town. Larger tires, even the factory larger sizes, amplifies this. But fair warning, it's going to be very hard to find a 4.30 truck on the lot. May have to do a lot of online searching, or workout a deal with the dealer to have them installed. Going price for an install is anywhere from 2-3 grand.
I don't know what trim level you are looking at, I bought an xl with the chrome appearance package because I wanted vinyl seats and floors. The options I deemed mandatory are cruise, factory trailer brake controller, and sync so I can use my phone through the radio. I wanted upfitter switches, and this truck didn't have them. It's definitely cheaper to get them from the factory, but they are easy to install yourself. Looking back, I would have ordered a xl truck with 4.30's, the upfitters, cab lights and power windows and locks. I added a keyless entry system that gives me power locks, but it was a pain, and I sure wish I had the lights on the mirrors at night on back roads. You only get the mirror lights with the power windows/locks. Here's a pic of a '16 xl with the chrome package.
Ford has been building this version of the F-250 since 2011. While the trucks aren't totally flawless, they've worked the vast majority of the bugs out of the design.
The gas 6.2L has the least concerns as far maintenance and reliability compared to the 6.7 diesel. However, the 6.7 is the best diesel that Ford has put out.
Since you're not gonna be regularly "working" the truck; hauling or towing heavy, IMO the diesel would probably be overkill for your needs. While it gets 20-30% better mileage than the gas motor, you have to be fastidious with the maintenance, and be real careful with fuel (water in the fuel system can result in $$$ repairs). Plus the diesel emissions system needs extra care and feeding - the system goes through a Re-gen/cleaning cycle that clears out the filters. The diesel likes to work, and runs best that way. If you don't mind the extra care, and can afford the added cost, from a pure fun/testosterone point of view the diesel is a blast to drive.
I have the 6.2L with the 3.73. It's my daily driver. I tow about 7.5K lbs a couple times a month and the truck is fine for my needs. (Although, I've never towed in the mountains, etc.) I had one problem. At 3K miles, the Check Engine Light came on. One of my O2 sensors died ("infant mortality"). It was repaired under warranty and I was in and out of dealer in 90 minutes. No other problems since.
I change the oil, check the fluids, put gas in it and go. It does everything I need it to do with ease. I look forward to driving it every day.
Buy what you like and can afford, and have fun.
I purchased my 2016 last year at this time. I was new to trucks but we wanted a travel trailer and I did not want to short change my self with a F150. I love my truck. My only issue is the Sync system in mine. I wish I had the new Sync 3. I heard a rumor they put Sync 3 in the later 2016's. I just have the 3.73 gears and they are fine for daily driving and pulling a 6,000 lbs travel trailer once a month. It is nice to know I can upgrade to the 4.30 if I need to someday if we upgrade the trailer. I have no issues. It seems to get better and better the more I drive it.
I purchased a left over 2016 F250 about 3 weeks ago. I was able to find one on the lot with the 6.2L and 4.30 gears. It did take a lot of searching, and I had to go to a neighboring state to buy it, but I think it was worth it to get what I wanted. This particular dealer still has one other with 4.30 gears.
I just turned 5000 miles on my 2016 6.2 with 4.30 rear end.
I love this truck and the 6.2 is rock solid and proven.
I would definitely look for one with 4.30 gears in the rear end. I would suggest looking at Ziems Ford Corners in Farmington, New Mexico. They order all their 6.2's with the 4.30's. Not sure what they still have on their lot but it would be worth getting in touch with them.
I just purchased my 16 with the 6.2 at the end of September. I lucked out and the dealer had what I was looking for with options already on the lot. Came out with a nicely optioned truck. I agree on the 4.30 gears. I like having them compared to the 3.73's I had in my last truck. And the 6.2 has been great so far.
Just another $0.02:
I also live in NJ and I have a '15 350 that I use just as a daily driver, for fun. (Traded in a 10 year old Camry for this, actually.) 6.2l engine, 3.73 rear, 4x4 ESOF. My advice: Go for it. I wouldn't worry about the rear ratio (either will be fine if you're not towing heavy stuff over mountains). Stomp on the gas and it moves. The 6-speed TorqShift transmission will find a suitable gear. It's nowhere near as quick as the modern 150 with the 3.5 EB, but who cares? (Especially with an empty bed, when the rear end jumps into another lane 'cause you hit a bump. This beast keeps me on my toes, but that's the joy of driving it.) Do your homework so you know every other truck in a 300 mile radius, then haggle until they give you a deal. I was very happy buying my off-the-lot SD from Performance Lincoln/Ford in Randolph, if that's near you.
Post pictures when you get it.
Best,
W
I just got a 2016 I haven't hit 500 miles yet but so far I like it I have got the 3:73 rear end gas mileage is 10 city 16 highway so far but it's not even broke in yet. So far it's a great truck can't wait till spring so I can hook our trailer up to it. Mileage isn't really what your looking for with a 3/4 ton truck your looking for power. If you want mileage get a F150 with the eco boost , tried one they have great pickup but didn't have the load hauling I needed.
