i think its coming from the front crankshaft seal, because there is oil more close to the top than the oilpan, what tools are needed for the crankshaft seal and any tips.
I just did this for the first time. It wasn't too difficult but I did need to get some new tools. I had to buy a harmonic balancer puller and also an installer. Ended up needing a long 1/2" breaker bar, a 15/16" socket, a timing cover gasket kit and I got a repair sleeve just in case I needed it after I messed something up. I had to remove the radiator. Removing the grille too made everything a whole lot easier.
The topic,. "Belts not spinning", that is current here addressees the center nut removal.
The gasket kit came with a new seal too. Just verify that first so you don't buy a separate one like I did. Gone are the days when the counter guy says, you know that kit comes with one right, do you really want two?
It came with a repair sleeve too!
I couldn't have done it without the puller but the odd thing about that was that the generic kit I picked up only had two of the proper sized bolts for the balancer hub. 3 of every other size but only 2 of the largest course threaded bolts in the kit. It requires 3, things will get bent with only 2. Luckily i had one in the tool chest otherwise I would have had to go to the Home Depot to get one bolt. So keep an eye out for that when getting a puller.
I made a puller with a handle on it and an aluminum slug that fits inside the crankshaft threads. That allows me to hold the crank in place while torquing and the slug prevents damage to the threads.
