I'm looking into possibly changing my distributor on my 302. If I put a ready to run in will I be bypassing the module computer thing on the fender? What is needed to get the ready to run to work. I've been a fan of those distributors. Less issues.
Your question is a bit vague....If you're replacing the old DSII with a "new" DSII, you'll still need all the ICM stuff that goes with it.
If you're replacing the DSII with an HEI or similar unit, the ICM and related wiring is no longer needed. You will, however, have to by-pass/eliminate the ballast resistor wire in the wire loom as the HEI requires 12 VDC at all times. No coil or related wiring is needed.....the ballast resistor wire goes to the coil from inside the cab/ignition switch.
Hahaha....yessir, the ICM can and has failed at the most inopportune times...
Good, the smaller cap wouldn't interfere with the air cleaner, if you're running a stock intake.
You'll still have to find a way to secure 12 VDC to the distributor, as I'm sure you know. My above statements still stick..... And they (HEI type distributors) do clean up the engine bay and eliminate wiring.
So there is a resistance in the wire going to the coil now. If I just got ride of the resistor in that line, and eliminated all the other ICM wiring, Ill be good. Well thats good to hear, and easy to do.

Correct. It starts at the ignition switch....green/red, goes into a connection with a pink(?) wire that reads: "Resistance wire do not cut or splice"....not sure how far into the loom but that puppy is about 4' long. There's also another color coded wire, says the same thing, depending on the year, and it's longer. They both loop back on themselves under the dash. Others on here can be more specific than I....again, depending on the year.

Easier said than done, my friend . Yell if you run into problems... finding that bad boy is one thing...you might just want to find it, cut and tape it, and run a new wire to the distributor.
