On the DuraSpark system that comes on the 302's. I'm putting the 302 in a 1957 F-250. I was wondering if the MSD Blaster 2 45,000 volt coil and MSD cap and rotor set along with 8 mm spark plug wires be a good set up on the 302. Aslo, how do you wire the distributor, coil, and module to work on my truck.
To convert to a Duraspark, it's a good idea to get the wiring harness that goes between the coil, the module and the distributor when you get the Duraspark module and dist. then everything basically plugs in.
There will be a plug coming off the module that has two wires, a red one and a white one. Your 12V wire that goes to the Batt. side of the coil on the old point ignition hooks to the red wire. The white one is for a resistor bypass for starting, but since that Blaster coil doesn't require a resistor you don't need to worry about that one.
It's really pretty simple, I've done a few of them. If you need a wiring diagram I can come up with one.
A wiring diagram would be helpful. Where could i pick up the wiring harness that goes between the coil, the module, and the distributor? Would that be something i could pick up down at Napa?
I'm going to be putting the 302 in there after this summmer, but better to get everythign lined up in advance, i'm gettin rid of the ole wore out y-block, Kevin wants to buy it and is picking it up in July.
This does sound pretty simple, definently beats the points, i've had my fair share of points and i hate them, mainly cause the y-block gave me grief about them.
Get a wiring harness from the wreking yard, I usually grab one along with the module, coil and dist. when I'm getting them for a conversion. If you've already got the other parts and just needs the harness, I think the yard would let you have it cheap. Or you could build your own using the diagram above.
I don't think the yards around here would have a good harness, the ones i've been have usually been went through, although i did pick up a nice set of 16 in 8 bolt rims/tires the last time i went. If i was to build my own harness, where would i get the connectors?
Might be tough to get the Ford connectors without ordering them new. You could just cut them off and use spade connectors. But that little harness isn't something that usually gets sold off a junked car or truck, and Ford went to the Duraspark in '75 and stayed with it till they switched to TFI so there's plenty o0f them out there.
Do you have the module already? What color is the plastic grommet around the wires coming out of it? They were color coded for different applications, blue, green, brown and yellow I believe. The most common and best for all-around use is the blue.
