I got a shifter out of a t-bird (floor shifter) to use on my aod from an e250 (column shifter) the tbird shifter did not have enough leverage maybe if had spent another week or two trying to make it work it would have but I dropped it and went to the Lokar got it on sale happy with the shifter now, but need to work out the TV cable and the EFI
I went with a Gennie shifter in mine. I found out with my FMX I was going to have to drop the pan on the trans and put in there shift arm with the lokar. I was trying to avoid that, but wound up having to make my own arm for the trans anyway. I just welded it on.
So look at everything, just not a cool looking shifter.
I should have said it's an aod and I have a shifter from a aerostar van which with a lot of modifying I think I can make work . But I am quite amazed that there are so few aftermarket shifters that will work and was just wondering if my searches have missed something or there are some other salvage ones that can be modified
I used the shifter from the 76 mustang I got the engine, trans and front suspension from. it was just supposed to be temporary back in 93 when I mocked it in.
Any shifter from any vehicle could be adapted to work in your truck. What it really comes down to is. Your abilities, Your desired finial product, and your wallet.
You have to remember that companies like Lokar have spent a lot of money in R&D to make these shifter kits as simple and effective as possible.
The $500.00 your spending on the shifter isn't just because they want to make a huge profit.
They are selling you a product that is purpose build for the transmission you are utilizing in your project.
Rather than you spending hours or days trying to adapt something from a salvage yard.
Yes I understand that but my budget build is rapidly [ NOT ] . I have to continually make decisions on time needed to modify and make things work or buy stuff that someone has already done the work on and this is part of building anything custom . I really was just curious if I had missed any aftermarket options or someone had come up with a salvage one that is better than my idea . The aerostar shifter is already 12" high and I believe extendable without a great amount of fab work ,but needs to be modified form a 4 speed auto to an AOD shift which I have already done
I was originally going to use a T-bird shifter with my 1990 AOD but the linkage would have taken some mods for the AOD, as I recall.
I waffled and finally went with the Lokar; which works but I think I need to modify my linkage next year to tighten up the shift.
I get your budget constraints; so if you have the parts what have you got to lose on trying to get them to work. You can always buy Lokar later if needed.
Absolutely tip I have all intentions of trying to make mine work first but thought I would throw it out there in case there was something I hadn't thought of , in my short time on here I have adopted numerous ideas that the great people on here have been kind enough to share
