2016 vs 2001

Hi,
I have a 2001 F-250. Great truck, I added 4" exhaust, AnN intake and a Banks Auto Mind. My wife is after me to get a new truck because we will be retiring soon. Do the 2016 F-250 Bio-Diesel trucks have any issues that I need to be aware of?
Thanks in advance for any feed back.
Roger

So far the 6.7 has proven to be extremely reliable and is mated to a great transmission. If you can find a 16 you should be able to get a pretty nice deal with the 17's coming in. Here's a link to the 6.7 section if you want to look through seems to be guys talking about how great they are with the occasional should I delete the emissions thread. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum205/

I mean, if you can swing it I would hold on the the 7.3 because they aren't exactly being made anymore. But the new trucks have an impressive record as far as warranty failures go. I'd still buy the longest Ford extended warranty I could get just because new vehicles are more expensive when things go wrong, but they're holding up extremely well.

There's likely to be a lot of people harassing you saying to buy the 6.2L gas motor. Get whichever motor you want, both are great. The diesel is significantly more powerful, and IMO looks to be a great platform. They're five years into the motor and there are no major design flaws like in the last two motors.

Going to a 6.7 will be like stepping into a sports car for you. Don't take me wrong by what I'm fixing to say, the 6.7 is a good motor, it's smooth and powerful and the motor is holding up to lots of miles. But In my opinion an extended warranty is mandatory with ANY new diesel. Parts and labor are expensive and the fuel systems are complex and sensitive. I don't like the idea that a bad batch of fuel can ruin an expensive motor or at best leave me stranded. A pin hole in a line can leave you stranded. My boss was left stranded on I75 north of Atlanta GA in near 100 degree heat with 3 horses in the trailer because of electrical issues in the cluster. Its been back to the dealer 3 times with issues. It's a low percentage that have issues with the 6.7, but it's a MUCH higher percentage than 6.2 gas owners. Some guys are just diesel guys and will never own a gas truck, and I can respect that. But a lot of guys are moving back to gas from diesel these days. And like I've said on here before, unless something big changes in my life where I'm towing very heavy very often, I will not go back to diesel. The 6.2 will tow anything your old(but great) 7.3 will, but it will be a different towing experience, and some don't like that. I love my 6.2, it's been flawless, my ONLY complaint is not ordering a truck with 4.30's. One member on here has 375,000 miles with no motor issues. Not trying to push gas on you, but I would at least test drive one. A quick answer to your question is, the 6.7 is as reliable as any Full size pickup diesel motor on the market today, but it's a lot more complex than your 7.3, and that also brings more issues. You will also have def fluid and regens to deal with. Not a big deal, but some of us don't want to full with it.

Your wife is wanting a new truck and you are wondering??...... man keep that wife!! Anywho, we sold our old '02 7.3 F250....great truck and bought a new '16 F350 dually and absolutely love it, tows the 5th wheel with no problem....but I will be getting an extended warr. long before the 3 yr/36 mo. is up. As said, there's just waaaay too much thay could go wrong that would cost a ton.

Well, she doesn't like me hunting and fishing as often as I do , so there are trade offs! But thanks everyone for the reply's, it has been extremely helpful. I'm narrowing down my sources for the truck. And I especially appreciate everyone's urging to get the extended warranty.

i'm not sure of your location, but there are some great deals out there on the 16's with the 17's hitting the lots. In my case I've been looking to upgrade to a lariat f150, but it just so happened that a dealer close to where i'm originally from had 2, 2015 F250 lariats with the diesel that they are offering 10K (or more) off the sticker. here a link to one ( New 2015 Ford F-250 For Sale | Norfolk NE ) I made a trade deal with them on my F150, to go up to a lariat as well as a diesel. I purchased this one ( New 2015 Ford F-250 For Sale | Norfolk NE ). If you press them a bit, you'll get more than 10K off. Ask for Kurt, tell him Jason Inness sent you.

They added a spray in bed liner and tinted my windows.

Not gonna advocate either gasser or diesel, but if you can afford it before you retire, I would go with a new truck. The '16 is the end of a 6-year long model run; all of the kinks have been worked out and you get a very reliable vehicle.
I went from a 2001 F350 CC, Long Bed 4x4, to 2015 F250 CC, Long Bed, 4x4 - same trim level on both. (I had to get a new truck because the '01 got squashed by a fallen tree in Hurricane Irene; but it was starting to have a series of little annoying issues.) The difference between the two trucks is almost night and day.

The '15 is much more refined and comfortable than the '01. The '15 still rides like a truck, but by comparison, the '01 rode like a buck board wagon. The new truck has a lot more features, and conveniences that didn't exist on my '01. The

If you're towing, then the new 6-speed transmission is a lot stronger and more reliable than the old 4 speed in the '01. The towing capacities, and payload are higher too.

Aside from putting a dent in my bank account I have no regrets.

The 2015 is a nice truck so I'm sure the 2016 is as well. I would price out a 16 versus 17 just to see what the real difference is. There have been times I was surprised to find out the incoming model wasn't much more than the outgoing model.
I pretty happy with the 6.2L gasser. I rarely tow over 7,000 lbs so my truck is overkill already for my needs.

Not necessarily, if your towing a 30' 7k travel trailer down the interstate, the f150 will pull it no problem, but the superduty is a lot more sure footed doing it. Along with bigger brakes. Makes it a lot safer for my family.

No travel trailers for me. We thought about it for a while then decided we just don't have the time to enjoy one. We'll stick with boating & hauling the car around for now.
When I had the enclosed car hauler the F150 did a great job towing it loaded, empty was a different story.
I do know what you are saying about the differences in the trucks. Our boat trailer has surge brakes & blew a master cylinder last summer, so no brakes. The F150 did a fine job towing it home. I used the F250 to take the boat in for service. I almost couldn't tell the trailer brakes weren't working.

They aren't making the 5.4L trucks anymore, either. Doesn't mean they're worth holding onto.

If you've got the 7.3L now, I would strongly advise that while you're looking for new truck options, you go ahead and list yours for what will seem like a ridiculous amount on Craigslist and local Facebook groups and such. A fool and his money are soon parted, and there are lots of people out there willing to pay way too much for old 7.3L trucks because "campfire wisdom" says they're the best thing ever. Once you move to a 6.7L you'll never look back at a 7.3L fondly again.

In the mean time, I went from a 7.3L to a 6.0L to a 6.7L and am now looking at possibly stepping laterally over to the 6.2L gasser. My needs have changed as have my long-term thoughts.
