Steering fluid may leak when the system is at rest (slow drip) but will leak heavier when the truck is running and the system is under pressure. And yes, the pump will suffer if the fluid level goes lower than tolerances under pressure. Fluid is lubricant as well as maintaining system pressure. If you are capable of replacing the seal, I would suggest that for sure. It's easy for some of Us older guys to say replace it with the latest and greatest but, that may not be always possible given $ flow. If you can see your way clear to go with the Redhead, then by all means, do it as it is a great replacement gear. All I'm saying is, it's spendy to put a truck back together and you'll have to excuse me but I was raised by Depression Era Grandparents so I do a lot of research before diving into anything. I was taught that rebuilding something is economically sound vs. buying new or rebuilt by someone else.....it's your labor and cheaper in the long run, knowing that you took the time to do it as right as possible.
There is a special satisfaction in knowing that what You rebuilt.....works.
WhatAChevy, great info. I will replace the seal in the near future, but will also be watching for the group deal for Redheads that has been mentioned.
Also, how much lift can a truck get before getting a drop pitman arm? I want to get a lift from 4 to 6 inches in the future and do not know if I can use the same pitman arm or not. If I am taking it off I may need to replace it with what I need. I also need new shocks so a lot of the lift kit contains parts I need.
A dropped pitman arm is mandatory if you're going with a 4" or more suspension lift.
Thanks. And a drop pitman arm cannot be used before the lift is installed can it? I would not think so, but I am just trying to make sure. It would be nice to only have to remove the pitman arm once, but I do not know if I can invest in the lift kit at this point. Worst comes to worst I can do it twice. If I rent the pitman arm puller from AZ I couldn't imagine it being to challenging to do.
Does removing it more than once mess up the gearbox and will I have to get another alignment (just had one a month ago) if I pull it?

I wouldn't advise it. Without the lift to compensate it will alter your steering geometry.

As long as you use the correct puller it should not damage the sector no matter how many times you remove it. Removing and replacing the pitman arm will have absolutely no effect on the alignment. Its splined to the shaft and will only fit one way because of the tooth pattern but you should have it aligned after installing the lift.
Is this what I need to seal the pump? It says it fits my pump, but I wanted to make sure it was the correct seals because some come with one others come with two and a c-clip like this one, and some come with a whole lot of rings.

Found out Alabama has started charging 8% tax active November 1st. I always bought there because of no tax and free two day shipping. I guess this tax may help local businesses though in the bright side.

State sales tax goes to the state's coffers. Local businesses do not benefit. I'm surprised it's taken this long for state sale tax enforcement concerning
"e-commerce".
I'm in Iowa and I don't get charged sales tax for online purchases unless I buy from a source within my own state. I have Amazon Prime and buy stuff tax free almost weekly on there.
