Walleye, man that is straight, but there are so many uses for this kind of meter. When you take voltages it gives you so darn little information about what is really happening in a circuit and ohming stuff out is kind of a pain.
Amps tells you immediately whether it is drawing power and how much. I guess it really boils down to how much electrical stuff you chase. I love electricity and use my meter almost every day. Plus, I love diagnostics, which I am just starting to learn on my truck.
Barely got it going again this morning. Ducked to 29 degrees, took 3 cranks to turn it over. Plus a big cloud of white smoke.
The smoke is just from the fuel right? Cuz on a warm start there isnt any. But if its colder than 35 degrees itll puff a lil bit.
I really need to burn up the rest of this fuel
I don't think that those temps are gelling your fuel up just yet but you shouldn't be having start issues if your glow plugs are up to snuff. My problems always showed up under 20 (or colder). For the knowledge of it you could get yourself a jar full, stick it in the freezer and keep an eye on it, then when you see it gel up take it's temp.

you should be good filling up like normal, just toss a bit of the diesel Kleene silver bottle when you fill up, as for my truck I did the led mod and installed one of these power meters in the power point that was falling out
So, about checking the ohms on that wiring harness. . . I kinda have them permanently sealed. . . Super glue on the gasket and JB weld on the outside. . . The clips broke and in an effort to get back on the road, I thought when am I ever gonna need to pull these off? Yeah. . . I will probably just go ahead and replace the glow plugs. I mean they are cheap, and I know how to do it.
My 2 cents worth... since you're a computer whiz...
Most important item in the truck is your batteries.... 2nd is your starter. That truck should not be taking so long to crank up. Its got to spin like a new motor, or its going to have trouble firing up.
3rd item.... battery cables.... especially in a 17 year old truck. No telling how messed up they are under the insulation cover.
Think of that truck as your would a motherboard... your truck is older, but its full of electrical parts connected to a computer. A bad circuit here or there.... eventually will cause a bigger problem.
Clean your Grounds...especially if you been off roading in the mud.
Everyone else hit the other things I would have said.

Computer whiz???
Batteries were recently load tested and were good. New starter in the spring. Battery cables I will need to check, is there a diagram of where they run? I know the ends that go onto the posts are crap. I need to pick up some new clamps

Yes will test those once I get the motor in, not old enough to drink so. . .
So, if my fuel is not gelling up, what should I look at for issues with cold starts? I will test my block heater tomorrow. Also will give my batteries a charge.
Glow plugs look right just check and make sure that they have 'Beru' etched into the side of them with the rest of their data. Beru is the manufacturer and I have gotten (not from Amazon) non OEM parts when they were advertised to be OEM.

Sounds like mine, before I put in new GP's. I was up in the mountains hunting and it took a while to start when the temps dipped. Changed my GP's when I got home and now I can start it up without being plugged in when the temps are below freezing.

Yeah its definitely not happy puffed white for a while this morning.
Would any of this stuff affect overall performance? Im having some issue, havent pulled codes yet. Or run diagnostics. But its running kind of rough. Slowing down from 60MPh it almost sounds like it shuts of real quick then pops back. IDK got some videos of it, need to run codes and diagnosis. Ill link the new thread here later tonight
