Can someone tell me what this round device near the pickup end of this FORD fuel sending unit pickup tube is, and what it is for? It definitely looks factory and not something that someone added. When I try to blow through the tube this device restricts all air flow in either direction. The sticker on top of the unit is FORD.

Subscribed... Never in MY lifetime... Especially from a dent. Is there any identification numbers on it by chance? And maybe the pickup was swapped from something besides a truck? The size of the seal cap puts it as a pre 1979 ford gas tank of some sorts...
I would think maybe a check valve to keep fuel from running back into the tank? Don't have one on my sender but mine is aftermarket. Maybe Ford had a siphoning issue from fuel running back into the tank and put that on to prevent fuel line starvation during cranking? Just guesses.
Is there an engineering number stamped on it?
That second line is puzzling, it looks like it's blocked off.
Could you post a picture of the sticker that says "Ford"?
Here's what the stock Ford fuel pickup looks like.
Their are a couple letters on top of the sending unit but I cannot make them out. Here are some additional pictures. This sending unit is associated with the ford black plastic 24 gallon over the rear axle fuel tank for 73 - 79 crew cabs. Their was a 3" piece of rubber fuel line,
hose clamped to the bottom of the pickup. I assume in order to get to the bottom of the tank.
Since there's no "sock," or filter on the unit - as in the picture Mike put up, my un-edumecated guess is that it's a filter of sorts. And since you can't get air through it either way, I'll bet it's plugged with goo.
If the whole unit is still functioning, 86 that bad boy and run a straight line to the bottom of the tank. Put an inline filter just after the gas leaves the tank.
Bear in mind that the only sending unit I've held in my grubby mitts was out of a '95 Stratus but I see some clues that make me suspicious.
The fuel line fittings are the plastic clip locking type, correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they are from the dent era. Unless late '70s dents saw high pressure fuel injection.
The second line has a rubber check valve as if it is a return line from a fuel injection pump.
The extension on the end of the retro encabulator has a hose nipple and was designed for either a filter or rubber hose.
I think someone retro-fitted a later model fuel tank and sender into your truck..
Lasermike is correct about that connector & return line. Looks like a prime example of redneck engineering. As far as the retro/turbo encabulator;I always wondered about the box of corn starch on that guy's workbench.
