tire shopping

I'll admit that I'm a habitual tire shopper, but I do actually need some tires before winter.

I notice Nitto has a new offering in a 265/70r17.
http://m.nittotire.com/light-truck-t...ht-truck-tire/

They are a 10 ply, but that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Look pretty promising for winter and off road trails.

What do you think?

Nitto, Goodforayear, BFG, etc. all offer these "hybrid" tires that seem to cross the lines between an AT and MT. But the Falken A/T3W is hands down the winner because it's more rugged, costs far less, and still has the severe snow service emblem on the tire.

I'm sure the Michelin's are a nice riding tire, but they sure aren't very aggressive.

I've known too many people on the wrong end of a tow strap with those M/S2's ... at least in this part of the country.

those falken's do look nice as well. I hadn't noticed that they carry the snowflake rating.

Yeah those Michelins are great as long as you're on pavement 100% of the time. But if you even so much as look out the window as you're passing a mud hole you will get stuck with those.

I've been buying Mastercraft Mastercraft Tires - Home tires for my vehicles for over twenty years. They're made by Cooper Tire and are the best "bang for the buck" tire I've found.

The Michelin LTX is a great tire, excellent grip and fantastic warranty. That Nitto for your Expedition seems like a pretty stiff tire for an SUV.

I will NEVER buy another Nitto product again.

If I was going to buy an "all in one" tire these would be my choices.

Goodyear Duratrac - I've driven a lot of trucks with these and they are awesome!

Cooper AT3 or the ATW I know a good amount of people with these and nothing but good things too say about them.

Firestone A/T nothing but good things on these from customers and friends with them.

The new BFG KO heard nothing but good things here also.

I guess it is all about your experiences...

I loved my cooper ATR and AT3 on my explorer, but the ATP I got from discount tire has ruined me on cooper forever. I've hated them from day one and they have only gotten worse from there. A couple friends at work got the AT3 and both of them swore off cooper after owning them too. And for that reason I wont buy the mastercraft tire either.

I had some firestone destination AT on my work truck. Was sorely disappointed in those too. No better than the hancook RF8 that it came with and only lasted half as long. Now I've got the TransForce AT in a 245/75r17 10ply and those, so far, have much more grip in the grass ECT. Almost good enough to make me want a pair foe my expedition, but the sipes dont go all the way down the tread block so as they wear they will get worse and worse.

I just saw the nittos were new and was looking for others' thoughts on them.

I've owned a variety of Michelin's, on both of my Explorers, my previous '06 SCrew, and the wife's sport sedan, not to mention both of my parent's vehicles. I'll always be a believer in their LTX MS/Defender offerings as they are the best all around tire for someone that occasionally goes off the pavement.
That being said, I'm THOROUGHLY enjoying the BFG KO2s that I put on the truck in March. They've yet to let me down and they look awesome too.

Nitto and Toyo seem hit and miss, people either love them or hate them, very few are indifferent.

Cooper has a strong following, and for a slightly more budget minded tire they are a good choice.

One of my customers mounted a set of Coopers on his Ram 1500 4x4 and I'm totally shocked at how fast they are wearing out. He's a construction supervisor and works locally.

Yeah, I will have to say that Nitto tires are the only ones I have ever heard common complaints about. Usually, everybody defends their choice of tire. So you hear nothing but positives about every brand out there. But with Nitto...I've actually heard multiple people complain about how they suck. No traction, wearing too fast, hard to balance, priced too high, etc.

Coopers are wonderful because they're made in USA, have a huge dealer network, and they've been releasing lots of new designs lately to keep up with technology.

I love my Falkens because they're a rugged hybrid tire, but you don't have to spend $1000 to get them. I got my 285/70-17s delivered to my porch for $633. There are guys who'll spend $400 more on a set to get a particular brand but if I can get the same quality for that much less I'll pull the trigger.

I am in need of tires as well , I too want an A/T and I am stuck deciding between p/lt tires. I am leaning towards Toyo at2 either p or lt , bfg ko2, and the kuhmo at51s ...I do tow a little bit but not enough to buy an LT. I do know the sr-a wranglers are the worst tire i have ever had on any truck/car i've owned. I have the 275-65-18 Just don't want performance to suffer with LT

In early tire shopping stage.....'13 w/ 20's.
Seriously considering Michelin LTX AT-2.
85% on-road, other 15% snow and slippery boat ramps.

Tires

Go with the coopers, I put the ATM's on about 4000 miles ago and their wearing good and they look great, look like the could get a pretty good bite in mud or snow. Go thru discount tire direct. You'll get 70.00 prepaid visa and 30.00 for getting their credit card. Have Wally World m&b and you'll save huge...
