I've always come home with XLT's. Now I have a 2013 XLT Super Crew 4x4, with the Coyote 5.0, and really like the truck a lot. Right now it shows 56k on the odometer. It does have the chrome, comfort and convenience package, tow package.
XL - gets you a vinyl floor. Crank windows (power is an option)
STX - monochromatic paint scheme - the look of a FX model and the specs between XL and XLT (reg cab and SCab only)
XLT - power standard - cloth (leather option) - all cab options - more wheel and tire options - some window tint
FX - monochromatic paint - less chrome - cloth standard (leather is more common) - most everything power including seats - window tint - stereo upgrades - flow thru console - SCab and SCrew cabs only
Lariat - like a FX but with chrome - standard leather - SCab and SCrew cabs only
King Ranch - Lariat features - special leather - SCrew cab only
Platinum - power everything (running boards too) - SCrew only
Limited - pretty much a Platinum in limited paint choices.
That's just the quick run down...the individual options are too heavy to list.
15+ got rid of a dedicated FX trim line, as it's now an option on all trims.
I know on my Ranger the FX4 level II included skid plates, special shocks and a Torsen diff. Do any of the current F150 trim levels indicate mechanical or driveline options?
Look for the "off road" package. You'll get a minor skid plate for the front cross member and a full tank skid. 11+ you'll have the ability to find an electronic locking differential, selectable via the 4WD ****. It's an open diff unless locked. Only locks to 35mph. It's available on a variety of trims.
Lariat, KR, and Platinum have a 4A as well as 4H and 4L setting. Limited comes with an AWD option.
I think the FX4 looks the best...monochromatic grille and bumpers make a pickup. But, I also usually buy XLT because it's the least expensive one that still has some nice options. Mine I think was ordered with 302A package because it's got electric sliding rear window, auto dimming interior/exterior mirror, towing package with brake controller, and the nice center console with 4 cup holders, among a few other things.
