Smokes when I accelerate hard
Hi, I have a 2003 F350 6.0 King Ranch. My first diesel truck. Bought it in March 2016. One owner with 102000 miles on it. Has a Bullet Proof oil cooler and 4 inch exhaust. Truck ran great until a week ago. Now, under any hard acceleration it blows out blue/gray smoke and does not seem to have as much power. Coolant level is constant and I cannot find any traces of water and oil mixing. Any one got some ideas. Thanks.

Absent any other info/codes I'd drain the oil and replace with 12 quarts of 5W40, pull and clean the EGR valve, check the alternator and FICM voltage, and check the exhaust for signs of oil.

Yes, the maintenance book says 15 quarts of oil but the way the dipstick sits in the oil pan it's impossible to really tell how far over full you are once you get to that point. So put in 12 quarts, and check the dipstick adding in half quart intervals to find "full" for your truck. A common leak is the rear of the oil pan, and it's because simply dumping in 15 quarts because the book says so isn't always right. Also you can't tell if you're growing oil of the dipstick is already maxed out, so running a "low" 12 quarts for 1k miles won't hurt anything, to be able to actually see if the level rises.

Thanks for the fast reply. No codes. I run T6 5W40 already. Alternator is less than 12 months old but will check output. FICM replaced in April 2015 but will check for 48V and clean EGR valve. No sign of oil in exhaust. I will report back with the results
