Fuel Guage

So my fuel gauge was reading Full when it was empty and way past full when it was full. I removed the fuel tank, ended up changing the sending unit for a new one. it seemed to work just fine. so I put it in the tank, put everything back together..... Ran out of gas at just below a half tank. I really dont want to remove the tank again. So if anyone knows what else the problem might be, please let me know.

You have to adjust the sweep of most replacement sending units. A simple bend is usually all it takes. You will have to remove the tank again to adjust it.

No the metal wire holding the float. It will have to be bent. Hold it firmly at the sending unit itself and adjust it further down. Its easier to use a tape measure and measure the depth of your tank from the flange where the sending unit mounts. I usually set them where they are 1/2 to 1 inch from the bottom. I like to have a couple gallons in reserve. Our trucks won't run on fumes.

so you think my float is touching the bottom of the tank making it read higher than it is
and I need to bend it up some?

Yes most likely that is the issue your having. Sometimes to get the correct sweep up and down the rod itself must be either shortened or lengthened.

Do you have the sending unit properly grounded? They work off of resistance and good grounding is necessary.

I used a wire brush and cleaned up where it is grounded (on the frame around the fuel tank) and it seems well grounded.

Its possible that the sending unit is defective or the wrong one. Doubtful but it could be your gauge as well. Or the voltage regulator for your instrument cluster could also be failing. Had the gauge ever worked correctly recently before changing the sending unit? Other gauges work ok?

the fuel gauge hasnt worked right for some time now. But just before I put the new sending unit in the fuel tank I hooked it up and made sure it worked right and it did empty was empty and full was full. Um, everything on the cluster works except the engine temp. that was going to be my next project.

I'd get a new sending unit. If you just purchased that one it should be under warranty still. I have had good luck with Dorman units FYIW.

So I went out and put it at full. It read about a quarter above full. I then slowly moved it down while someone else watched the Gauge, I got it all the way too what should have been half a tank before it even started to drop on the guage and I gave it plenty of time to move down before I got to what should have been half tank.

I even put the old one on and it acts different then it originally did before I replaced it. There is just a lot of inconsistency.

I'd check the wiring to make certain there are no bare spots. Sounds like just moving the wiring harness will create some inconsistencies.
