If you have a 78/79 straight axle swapped under your 96, then you need 78/79 parts for the axle itself.
As far as the drag link, I bet the 96 connection end (truck frame part) is going to need a metric bolt and the axle end is standard.
Looks like you are trying to get the tie rod end nut off (since you have a floor jack under it)? And I bet the stud is turning and not letting you get the nut off?
Since you are probably needing to replace it, just 4" cutting wheel it off, stud nut and all.,or Sawzall, or worse case torch it.
