2000 7.3 engine tap

My engine makes a slow tap sound

A slow tap from where? And what are we calling slow? Some audio / video would be perfect!

Buy an auto stethoscope - less than $20 and see if you can isolate the area. Most likely in the valve train (damaged rocker arm, damaged lifter, injector not bolted down tightly), but could be piston related (broken piston skirt, broken rings, piston pin). If the tap is a little heavier sounding could be connecting rod bearing at the crank.
