Tailgate mounting question

Tailgate mounting question
Is there something that goes between the tailgate and the bed sides where they meet when tailgate closes on a 48 f1. Should besides be tight to the roll on the gate or a certain space between them if I make sides level I have about a half inch gap.

I'm not sure to which year, model, bed size, etc. of truck you are referring but the bed board end cap (#23 in the attached) fills the gap on '48-'52 F1s.
