It again appears nothing is simple. Josh and I have been swapping texts, and he says he'll look for cast in numbers on these this evening.
Going through Ford chassis catalogs I find nothing listed for tow hooks in the 1950 reprint copy of the Green Bible. The 1/51 and 1/52 catalogs list #8T 18245-B for 1948-1950, models F-4/5/6/7/8, while #8T 18245-C is listed for those models in 1951 and 1952. Nothing is listed for models C, D, or Y. The 1952 accessories brochure, however, lists 8T 18245-C and specifically references the full model line. The 7/53 O.S.I. catalog obsoletes both numbers with no cross reference to a later number.
The 1/54 catalogs, F-100/600 and Big Job editions, and the 12/55 F-100/600 catalog, list #TAAA 18245-A for all models.
The 1948-1956 (1964 reprint) and 1957-1963 (1970 reprint) show no grouping number 18245. Another example of obsoleted parts disappearing from later catalogs. The 11/58 catalog, however, lists B7C 18245-A for models T through Z, and B7T 18245-A for models W through QNW. Interestingly it also lists B9C 18245-A for models C and D (excluding those with deluxe bumper), but no mention is made for model Y.
If one or another of Josh's hooks came with the hoard of pieces he got in the boxes with his F-2 M-H there is also the fact that Marmon-Herrington lists their own tow hooks in their manuals. Standard Ford parts are not listed. The numbers are mercifully all the same for the different light and medium duty models for which I have catalogs. The right hand hook should have R5 5920-A cast into it, and the left would have R5 5921-A. These are also shown in one manual as part of kit R3 8114 for mounting on the rear of the truck. Stu

Here are some tow hooks on ebay for $149. They are listed for trucks 1948 to 1955 but Kevin BigWin says 53-56 hooks are different from 48-52 hooks.

The part number differences with no interchange numbers confirm they are different pieces during each era. Can anybody identify the era of the eBay hooks? Stu

Josh, I have a pair that I took off of a '51 F5 US Army truck that I parted out. They look like the larger one you have in the pic, but the bolt spacing is 4 5/8" center to center. There are no part numbers or markings on them. They were mounted parallel to the angle of the inner top edge of the frame. The bumper and inner most holes were drilled to 5/8" and another 5/8" hole was drilled close to the hole in the top of the frame behind the bumper. Is that the way they were normally mounted?

One set of the larger hooks came off a 51 f5 army truck and were mounted on a diagonal as Mark describes.
The other set i think came off the 47 1.5 ton MH truck.
I need to go back through old photos to confirm.
I wish i could remember the smaller hooks origin?
Will go through old pictures and see if something jumps out at me.
I cant make out any numbers on either hook
Style but the paint and rust is thick. Maybe after some wire wheeling ill see something?

These are definitely not Ford OE but they are not $150 either You can buy these for $10-15 at most good 4WD stores. I don't recommend the chrome versions as they do rust. Of course a good sanding and coat of paint fixes that. Good ones will come with the right size and strength bolts.
Here is one from Grainger made by Reese. They make all the hitches and tow hooks for Jeep. Most tow hooks are rated at 10,000#. If they do not show a rating then I would not buy them.
I have never seen one made by Reese break of even bend . . . and I have done some terrible things with them.
