Question Bed Rails

I have been working on the box of my truck for sometime now but I have a question. The bed rails are pretty banged up and im having a hard time getting them straight. Its a 43 year old truck so obviously its no longer like new. Would it be ok to us body filler on the bed rails or is the a big no no. Im worried about it being chipped and scraped off but I think im just being paraniod. This sounds like a such a newbie question haha. The other thing is that a have a mint ford tailgate and a banged up mercury tailgate. Could I cut out the scripting of the mercury tailgate and weld it into the ford because that would be easier than fixing the mercury tailgate. Thanks a bunch. After im done this im done all body work yahhhhh.

I'd bondo the rails without worrying about getting chipped or scratched if you're not gone be hauling a lot in the bed. I'd try to restore the merc tailgate and save both so you would have a spare. It would be a shame to cut up a mint ford tailgate and an original merc tailgate
